Toyota Land Cruiser Prado – What’s Cooking?

The Land Cruiser Prado could be a perfect launch for the brand in India. The model will be slotted above the Toyota Fortuner, which is currently a big miss, as the next model in Toyota’s lineup, the Vellfire, is priced at Rs 1.58 crore (on-road, Mumbai). While the best upgrade for Fortuner owners in India could be the Toyota LC, which costs Rs 2.74 crore (on-road, Mumbai). So, there’s a humongous gap between the Fortuner and LC in India, which Toyota will surely try to narrow down.

The current price gap can be narrowed by introducing a new model between these two, and the LC Prado can do this. If Toyota launches the Prado SUV, we expect it to be priced between Rs 80 lakh and Rs 1 crore (on-road, Mumbai). Hence, the Prado could be an exciting model for someone looking to upgrade from a Fortuner.

Apart from that, the LC Prado will also get the Land Cruiser tag. Many buyers who are willing to spend above Rs 50 lakh or Rs 60 lakh do prioritise a well-known brand tag to satisfy their purchase. Moreover, the rugged design and off-road capabilities of the LC Prado will make it a favourable purchase. Currently, the best-selling luxury car in India is the JLR Defender, which has a rugged stance, so buyers are surely looking for it, and Toyota can easily offer it.

Features & Powertrain

Talking about the model, Toyota keeps the Prado a very old-school SUV, with physical buttons instead of integrating everything into the touchscreen. Also, in terms of features, the SUV gets some necessary ones, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a single-pane sunroof, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Ventilated and powered front seats, a Wireless Charger, a JBL sound system, and more. Overall, there is a nice blend of retro appeal & technology.

Currently, the brand has not shared any details about the powertrains. However, we expect the model to come with a 2.8-litre diesel engine. This engine produces 201 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque. However, we can also expect the brand to launch this SUV with the new 48V hybrid system in the country.

Launch & Pricing

We expect the Toyota LC Prado to launch in India by mid- or late 2027. The model is expected to be priced between Rs 80 lakh and Rs 1 crore (on-road, Mumbai). With that, it will likely be a good upgrade for the Toyota Fortuner owners, as well as for those who want a rugged and reliable SUV.
