Most Fuel-Efficient Car In The World!

Lately, the hybrid movement is gaining traction in the Indian automotive segment. But which car started this movement globally? The answer is the Toyota Prius, the pioneer of hybrid cars. Globally, it is recognised as the “Green Car”, and now you can get it for the price of a Tata Nexon. We have found this 2016 model listed on the used-car marketplace for Rs 16.99 lakh.

What’s particularly impressive is that this unit has been imported from Japan and is in squeaky-clean condition. It is a quirky-looking car, but would you really care about the design if you are getting 40kmpl of mileage? It is specifically designed to minimise aerodynamic coefficient, or in simpler terms, maximise mileage. The Prius may not be as rugged-looking as other Toyota models, but it will definitely turn as many heads as it does because of its rarity. A Prius is pretty hard to come by, especially the 2nd-generation model.

Toyota Prius – Is The 40 KMPL Figure Real?

In 2025, the Prius set a world record in fuel efficiency. The Prius was driven from Los Angeles to New York (a 4,500km journey), and it achieved an average fuel efficiency of 2.53 litres/100km. This translates to around 39.5kmpl. This journey encountered several terrains, making this feat even more impressive.

It is worth noting that the car that we have here is an older model with a smaller 1.8-litre petrol engine (compared to the newer 2.0-litre engine). Nonetheless, a few owners of the 2016 Prius have reported a real-world mileage of 88 MPG, which is around 37.54 kmpl. You may need to be extra cautious when driving, but the 40 Kmpl figure is achievable with this car.

Toyota Prius – What Else?

The 1.8-litre petrol engine is mated to an electric motor and an e-CVT gearbox. The power figures are rather measly at 121 bhp & 142Nm, but you must make such a sacrifice for its fuel efficiency. Moreover, it was relatively well-equipped for a 10-year-old car, with features like dual-zone climate control, a 6.1-inch infotainment screen, push-button start, an electronic parking brake, and LED headlights. Furthermore, the Prius is quite spacious on the inside. It also gets a gigantic 690-litre boot.

You may think that since it is a Toyota, this deal is a no-brainer. But don’t be so certain. While the Prius is relatively reliable, the maintenance will be a painstaking task. Since it is an import, spares are hard to come by. So if you are planning to buy it, make sure that you have a reliable parts supplier just in case. Not to mention, if you invest an additional 4-5 lakhs, you could get one of the Victoris, Grand Vitara, or the Hyryder, which are more reliable and better equipped. You may miss out on the exclusivity if you buy one of these SUVs, but you can be worry-free.
