Volkswagen is one of the most desirable automakers in India. It may not generate sales volumes like those of Mahindra, Tata, and others, but the VW badge holds a lot of value. Reports suggest that VW is currently working on a more affordable version of its flagship SUV to take on the Toyota Fortuner more fiercely.

More Affordable Volkswagen Tayron!

Volkswagen recently unveiled the Tayron R-line. And on paper, it seems like a perfect SUV for the Indian roads. No worries about the diesel ban, exciting to drive, practical, loaded with features and most importantly, well-built. However, there is one flaw with the Tayron R-line – its pricetag. The R-line implies that it is the top-end model, and it is the only variant on offer.
So, to cater to those with a smaller budget, Volkswagen is planning to unveil a lower-spec variant soon. And since the outgoing Tayron is a CKD unit, lowering the price won’t be much of a struggle. But other than lower pricing, does it have any positives? Let us find out!

Volkswagen Tayron – Looks & Features

Being the sporty variant, the Tayron gets “R-liney” design bits, like blacked-out elements, a red VW badge, sporty alloys, and more. These elements will be dropped for a more elegant look, with less aggressive bumpers, more chrome accents, and smaller alloy wheels. It is also unlikely that lower variants get the gorgeous “Ultra Violet Metallic” colour scheme. It will be a tamer version of the Tayron R-line. Some people may not love the aggressive look of the Tayron R-line, and the lower variant will be a blessing for them.
The feature list will also include a few omissions. It could miss out on an ADAS suite, an electric tailgate, the Harmon Kardon sound system, a heads-up display and a panoramic sunroof. Moreover, it is expected to get a smaller infotainment screen. Nonetheless, it would offer important features such as cruise control, power and ventilated front seats, tri-zone climate control, 9 airbags, TPMS, etc.

Powertrain

Fortunately, no changes are expected inside the engine bay. The same 2.0-litre TSI engine will be carried over, with an identical engine tune as the R-line. It would be mated to a 7-speed DSG and Volkswagen’s 4Motion drivetrain as standard. Reports suggest that Skoda is bringing in a diesel engine for the Kodiaq soon, and the Tayron could benefit from it as well.

Volkswagen Tayron – Expected Pricing & Launch

The Tayron R-line is priced at Rs 56.08 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). This is a hefty price tag, especially given that it is a CKD unit. We expect the lower variant to be priced between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 52 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
Volkswagen has a busy 2026 with the upcoming launches of the Virtus facelift, 2nd batch of Golf GTI, and a sub-4 m SUV. Thus, the lower trim Tayron is expected in the early months of 2027.
