One of the key reasons the Nexon is the best-selling SUV in India is its wide range of powertrain options. Petrol, diesel, CNG and EV – the Nexon has the best options for those who want mileage, performance, and daily usability. However, these Tata SUVs will soon be introduced with something that will offer better mileage than even the Nexon CNG. Curious to know more? Here are all the details!

New Tata Hybrid SUVs

That’s right! Tata may soon introduce hybrid tech for the first time in its SUVs to offer best-in-class mileage and smooth performance. And the SUVs we are talking about are none other than the Sierra, Harrier and Safari. When the Sierra was launched, the limelight was on the SUV’s design, features and the new, powerful 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, which was also offered in Harrier and Safari.
However, Tata had also introduced something very interesting, which could play a major role in the future – the new 1.5-litre NA petrol engine. Why do we say so? Well, the 1.5-litre NA petrol engine is an Atkinson cycle engine, which is focused more towards delivering a refined driving experience along with impressive fuel economy figures. However, the engine alone cannot beat the fuel economy figures of the Nexon CNG. So, how would these SUVs beat the Nexon CNG in fuel efficiency? Here’s how!

22 Kmpl From These SUVs?

Being an Atkinson cycle engine, it is built with future hybrid accommodation in mind. This means that the Sierra can be offered with a hybrid powertrain in the near future, allowing for fuel economy figures that are unheard of. For instance, the Maruti Grand Vitara offers both CNG and hybrid. The hybrid Grand Vitara has a claimed ARAI fuel economy of 27.7 kmpl, while the CNG offers an ARAI claimed fuel economy of 26.6km/kg. From this example, it is safe to say that the Sierra, Harrier and Safari hybrid could quite easily meet or even exceed the claimed fuel economy of the Nexon CNG (ARAI claimed – 17.44km/kg). We expect the hybrid to offer a claimed fuel economy of around 20-22kmpl, which would be quite impressive.
The brand will integrate a battery pack that uses the engine as a generator to eke out more driving range. The 1.5-litre NA petrol engine will act as a range extender, similar to the setup on the Honda City EHEV. Tata will likely bring in this hybrid tech soon in the Harrier and the Safari, along with the Sierra. Speculations suggest that the next-gen Harrier and Safari will be underpinned by the newer ARGOS platform, which can accommodate a hybrid powertrain. This will allow both the Harrier and Safari to achieve impressive fuel economy figures. This will give all 3 SUVs an upper hand in their segment. The Sierra could potentially offer better mileage than even the Nexon CNG.
