Tata Sierra Hybrid In The Works!

HEVs are slowly gaining traction in the market. HEVs received a positive response with the Grand Vitara, Hyryder, Victoris, and the Innova Hycross, and thus other automakers are stepping in as well. Maruti has planned a wide range of affordable hybrids; Kia is looking to hybridise the Seltos and Sonet; and Hyundai is working on the Creta hybrid. And now Tata would be joining the hybrid trend as well.

The Sierra would be the first one to benefit from this new powertrain. What better way to introduce a new technology than using it on your most popular model first? The outgoing ICE models aren’t the most fuel-efficient, as the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol returns just 15.3 kmpl. The issue will be solved with the hybrid.

Tata Sierra Hybrid – Is It Confirmed?

It is all but confirmed. The Sierra is based on the ARGOS platform, which supports a hybrid powertrain. But here is what more or less confirms it. The 1.5-litre NA petrol uses the Atkinson cycle instead of the conventional Otto cycle. We won’t delve into the engine’s technicalities, but all you need to know is that this engine type is commonly used in hybrids like the Innova Hycross and Grand Vitara.

The Sierra’s 1.5-litre engine is ready for hybrid adoption. Furthermore, many people have complained about the lack of power with this powertrain, which further fuels the rumours that the hybrid is on the cards. The lack of power implies that it prioritises fuel efficiency, and the hybrid powertrain will boost both fuel efficiency and power.

Tata Sierra Hybrid – Expected Launch & Pricing

The Sierra hybrid seems a long way off for now, as the EV is Tata’s current priority. However, we could see the hybrid by 2027. Tata may also offer the Safari and Harrier with this platform soon if demand asks for it. Speculation also suggests that the next-gen Harrier and Safari would adopt a newer platform.

It could be priced between Rs 19 lakh and Rs 25 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). This seems like a fair price, as you would make up for the premium you pay for the hybrid tech in no time. You may not get the sweet sound of a diesel with the hybrid, but you will enjoy the savings on fuel costs.
