1. Tata Sierra AWD – Upcoming 4X4 SUVs

Tata has managed to create massive buzz in the Indian market with the new Sierra, reviving one of its oldest nameplates. However, unlike the OG Sierra, this one misses out on 4WD. Worry not, as Tata has mentioned that the Sierra will get AWD. In fact, the AWD will be offered not only with the EV but also with the ICE version. The electric version of the Sierra is expected to be launched by May 19, 2026.

So, we could get to see a Sierra.ev AWD soon. Bear in mind, the Sierra.ev may offer 4X4 or QWD, while the ICE version will likely feature an AWD setup. We expect Tata to offer the Sierra EV with 2 battery pack options: 55kWh and a 65kWh battery pack. By the end of this year, we could also get to see an AWD version of the ICE Sierra. This could tip the scales into the Sierra’s favour.

2. JSW JeTour T2

JSW is making a bold move, bringing in the Jetour T2 to India. This SUV will likely be priced around ₹40 lakh, placing it close to the Fortuner. While there aren’t any confirmed details, we do expect the India-bound Jetour T2 to get 4X4. We say so because the international-spec Jetour, with its 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, does get 4X4. Not only does the Jetour T2 look like a capable off-road SUV, but it also packs features and tech that make it quite off-road friendly. Centre and rear locking differentials, multiple terrain modes and impressive approach and departure angles will allow the SUV to perform quite well off-road. That said, we could expect to see the India-bound version to get a 1.5-litre petrol hybrid engine, allowing for impressive mileage figures that could put CNG cars to shame. The SUV will enter the Indian market by the festive season of 2026.

3. Tata Safari EV – Upcoming 4X4 SUVs

The Safari has always been one of Tata’s most impressive SUVs ever since it was launched. While the current Safari does not get AWD or 4X4, the Safari Storme was quite a capable off-road SUV with a proper 4X4 setup. Soon, the Safari will get 4X4 or, as Tata calls it, Quad-Wheel Drive (QWD). The electric Safari will likely borrow the EV powertrain from the Harrier.ev which includes the 65kWh battery pack and a 75kWh battery pack. However, speculations suggest that Tata might be working on a larger 80kWh battery pack for improved range.

Witnessing the success of the Mahindra XEV 9S becoming the best-selling EV in February 2026. Tata will surely want a piece of this cake and the Safari.ev do that for the brand. The Harrier.ev is one of the most powerful Indian SUVs, and we will likely see similar performance from the 7-seater SUV. The electric version of the Safari will likely go into production by August, and we can expect Tata to launch this by the end of this year.

4. Mahindra Thar 3-Door Facelift

Mahindra has gained quite a lot of success with its two Thar models – the 3-door and the Roxx. While the Roxx gets all the bells and whistles, the 3-door is a more affordable and accessible version. However, the performance and off-road capabilities are still commendable with the 3-door Thar. And soon, we expect to see a Thar 3-door facelift, which will bring in a few cosmetic and feature upgrades. Meanwhile, the 4X4 system, the rugged build and off-road capabilities will likely continue to be the highlight of the SUV.

The powerful engine options, 4X4 capabilities and the sheer feel of driving a proper off-road SUV are the USPs of the Thar, and we expect that to be retained in the facelift version. The test mule of the facelift has been spotted multiple times, but there is no confirmation from the brand regarding the same. We can expect Mahindra to launch the Thar 3-door facelift in the second half of 2026.

5. Toyota Land Cruiser FJ – Upcoming 4X4 SUVs

Last but probably the most exciting one of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ. First showcased at the Japan Mobility Expo 2025, the Land Cruiser FJ was quite the showstopper for the Japanese brand. Offering the world-renowned Land Cruiser nameplate at an affordable price point seems like a great strategy. It stays true to Toyota’s Land Cruiser design language with a boxy and simplistic exterior and closely resembles the Land Cruiser 250s from Toyota’s international market.

Much like the bigger LCs, the FJ seems to be a “function over form” SUV, prioritising off-road capabilities, reliability and longevity over a long list of features and tech. And yes, it will get 4X4. Land Cruisers are known for their unbreakable nature, especially off-road, and the FJ will surely live up to this. Industry sources suggest that the LC FJ will likely get Toyota’s 2.7-litre NA petrol engine, seen in the Fortuner. However, rumours also suggest that the SUV could feature a diesel engine option as well. As they say, “Good things come in good time”, you are going to have to wait for this one, as it will be launched by late 2028.
