Independence Day 2025, Mahindra revealed its new platform, the NU_IQ, along with 4 new concept cars, namely the Vision S, SXT, T and X. Out of these, the Vision T was quite a striking SUV. A rugged and robust design, along with the Thar’s iconic slatted grille, hinted that this could be an electrified version of the Thar that we would get to see in the future. The SUV was tall and boxy, with knobby tyres, a front tow hitch and a boot-mounted wheel.

Even before showcasing this new platform, Mahindra had already showcased a Thar.e, an electric version of the Thar, back in 2023. And now, the Vision T looks like a more complete version of the same. Being a lifestyle SUV, the Thar has always been a go anywhere vehicle, with impressive performance and looks that turn heads. So, will the upcoming Thar, based on the Vision T, have the same oomph? Let’s find out!

Design And Features

As we mentioned, the Vision T does look like a future project of the Thar and has many Thar-like design elements like the grille, the stance, and much more. The reinforced front and rear bumper, the massive ground clearance, and the rugged off-road-focused tyres add to the character of the SUV. So, if Mahindra are able to design the upcoming Thar closer to the Vision T, it will surely stand out from the crowd. Stepping inside the Vision T, Mahindra seems to have done quite an impressive job.

An upright dashboard, with 3 different colours, a dull green theme, metal plates on the door cards and an overall rugged build even inside accentuates the off-road focused character of the Vision T. The boxy and sturdy theme continues all throughout the cabin, and just by sitting inside, one could say it is a Thar. In terms of features, the Vision T gets a massive portrait display on the dashboard, a digital instrument cluster, dual-zone fully automatic climate control, ventilated front seats and much more. We expect it to get additional features like powered front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless charging pad, an ADAS suite and the list goes on.

New Mahindra Thar – Powertrain And Pricing

Mahindra’s new platform, the NU_IQ, can accommodate all types of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, electric, and hybrid. This means that we would get to see a plethora of engine options in the production version of the Vision T or the Thar based on this platform. We can expect the SUV to retain its current engine options: a 1.5-litre diesel engine, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine.

We can expect to see a new hybrid powertrain from Mahindra based on the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, and we can also expect the electric version to get 2 new battery pack options. Much like the current Thar, the 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine will both get 4X4. The hybrid version could get e-4WD, while the EV could also get 4X4. We expect the Vision T-based Thar to be launched by 2028 and could carry a starting price of around Rs 13.50 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
