Royal Enfield Himalayan – What’s New?

The inevitable has happened, and the new electric Himalayan looks even more purposeful. At the RE’s annual event, the brand showcased a pre-production model of the upcoming Himalayan electric and took it for a joy ride. We were able to see a slew of details from the pre-production model, giving us a glimpse of the Himalayan’s future. While petrol enthusiasts might dread this change, the Himalayan electric does look like a purpose-built ADV with potent off-road prowess. So here’s everything that is new in the Himalayan electric:

  • Ohlins rear shock
  • Brembo front and rear brakes
  • Platinum Spoke wheels
  • Adjustable front and rear suspension
  • Twin Brembo master cylinders up front
  • Bridgestone Battlax AdventureCross

The new Himalayan electric gets both the front and rear brakes on the handlebars, unlike traditional motorcycles. Moreover, it features a twin-master cylinder setup from Brembo. On the suspension front, it gets upside-down forks upfront, which look to be adjustable. Like the rear suspension setup, we can expect the front USD forks to be from Ohlins. In the pre-production model, we can see that it gets SM Pro Platinum wheels. However, they seem to have a traditional tube setup. We do expect RE to offer tubeless spoke wheels in the production spec model. For better off-road performance, RE has offered Bridgestone Battlax AdventureCross tyres, which are specifically curated for better off-road traction and durability.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Electric – Powertrain

One of the key takeaways from the RE Himalayan electric is the electric motor on offer. In the images, a STARK electric motor can be seen. STARK Future is a Spanish company that manufactures electric powertrains and enduro motorcycles. We expect the STARK electric motor to produce around 60-80hp, depending on the state of tune on offer. The main takeaway here would be the torque on offer. In a short clip, a rider was seen doing burnouts with ease, showcasing the torque on offer. We expect a 14kWh battery pack for the electric Himalayan, which would be good for a range of around 200km on a single charge.

Apart from the key details, new elements that were spotted on the electric Himalayan include all-LED lighting, a single-piece seat, a dummy fuel tank and much more. Expected features include a larger instrument cluster, multiple riding modes, switchable ABS, multiple traction control modes and the list goes on. We expect Royal Enfield to price the Himalayan Electric between Rs 7.50 Lakh to Rs 8 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). It will be interesting to see what the production-ready version of the Himalayan electric looks like.
