Tata’s CNG Plan Details

Tata is planning to invest more in alternative fuel looking at the government’s stance on diesel engine and petrol’s mixture. In 2024, Tata Motors registered over 1.2 lakh CNG car sales. These sales come from the Tata Tiago, Tigor, Punch & Nexon. With these, the Indian automaker is planning to include more CNG-powered cars in the portfolio. To help increase the sales, as well as offer an alternative fuel option. 

At present, the Tata SUVs that don’t get a CNG option are – Curvv, Sierra, Harrier & Safari. Now, Tata Motors are now evaluating the Curvv and Sierra SUVs to be extended with CNG offerings – according to Autocar. 

As per the plan, it would be easy for the brand to offer a CNG option with the Curvv. Thanks to the 1.2-litre turbo petrol (Revotron) engine that does its duty on Nexon with CNG. However, the Sierra is expected to be powered by 1.5-litre NA petrol, turbo petrol and diesel engine. Here, Tata might target the NA engine for CNG option. At present, the brand has not shared much information – so we would need to wait for a bit.

Tata Hybrid Plans

Apart from the CNG option, the automaker is also evaluating to introduce hybrid powertrains. 

While, the CNG options will be extended to the Curvv and Sierra – the hybrid powertrains will be first targeted with the Safari and Harrier SUVs. 

In a talk with Autocar, Tata Motor’s PV managing director, Sailesh Chandra suggested that the hybrid option will not be brought in to be an alternative fuel option, but will also target the performance reasons. That said, it is currently under evaluation, it might take some more time for the brand to reveal the powertrain details.
