Earlier, it was speculated that Triumph is working on downsizing its 399cc engine to position it in the sub 350cc category. Now, Autocar reports suggest that Bajaj confirmed the extension of this strategy to the KTM range too.

At present, specific details of this new engine are still under cover. However, being a downsized version of the current engine, it will feature a smaller bore resulting in 3-5bhp drop in power output. For reference, Triumph Speed 400 currently produces 39.5bhp and 37.5Nm, while KTM 390 Duke makes 45.5bhp & 39Nm. With the downsizing, the new Triumph 350cc models might produce around 35-36bhp & 32-33Nm, and KTMs might make around 40-41bhp & 36-37Nm.

The new 350cc motorcycles will be pivotal for the brand’s growth in India, as it will get benefitted from the new GST changes, helping to price it proportionally.

The entry in the 350cc category, might not impact Triumph at large as compared to the KTM. The KTM 390s are favoured because of its overstressed yet powerful engine. KTM would need to deliver the same kind of performance with its new 350cc models, which might hamper the sales of 250s and 390s in the long run.
