New Mahindra XUV 7XO Rival

Why replace the Hector at all? - Mahindra XUV 7XO RivalWhy replace the Hector at all? - Mahindra XUV 7XO Rival

This is the question worth asking first. The Hector isn’t a failure, far from it. It sold well, built a loyal customer base, and introduced India to the idea of an “internet car” before connected vehicles became an industry standard. So why replace it? Because the market has moved on. The Creta, Harrier, Scorpio-N, and Safari have all raised the bar significantly in the past two years. The Hector, despite its updates and facelifts, has started to feel like a product from a different era. Now MG knows this. The Starlight 560 appears to be their direct answer to it.

MG Starlight 560

MG is set to introduce the Starlight 560 with a smarter, more efficient approach. In a segment where large 7-seater SUVs usually demand a compromise on mileage, MG aims to bridge that gap by offering both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and EV options, giving buyers a balanced mix of efficiency, performance, and practicality. In an environment where fuel prices are constantly rising, and emission norms are becoming stricter.

The “560” is believed to hint at a larger platform or wheelbase, indicating more space than the current lineup, while the “Starlight” name reflects MG’s shift toward a more modern and aspirational identity.

In the latest spy footage, the MG Starlight carries forward a familiar design touch with its five-spoke alloy wheels, similar to those on the Hector. However, the real highlight is its front fascia, which looks far more modern and striking. Sleek LED headlamps, sharper DRLs, and a longer, flatter bonnet give it a stronger road presence and a more premium, sophisticated appeal.

At the same time, the Starlight 560 is expected to adopt cleaner lines and a wider stance. With an expected length of around 4.7 to 4.8 metres, it could directly rival SUVs like the Tata Harrier and the Mahindra XUV 7XO. MG appears to be going big, literally, in a segment where road presence matters, similarly to Majestor.

Features

If there’s one area where MG has consistently impressed in India, it’s the cabin experience, and the Starlight 560 is expected to raise the bar even further. Early reports suggest Starlight will offer a noticeably more refined, modern cabin. An upgraded software interface with smoother performance, enhanced connected-car features, and a cleaner dashboard with fewer physical buttons will define the layout.

Features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, powered front seats, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera are likely to be offered, complemented by fresher upholstery and a more premium cabin theme. It is also expected to be available in both 5- and 7-seater configurations.

This is one area where the MG Hector has often faced criticism, especially regarding fuel efficiency. Many owners report real-world mileage of 5-6 km/l, with the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine typically delivering only single-digit efficiency, a clear drawback for buyers.

In contrast, the Starlight 560 is expected to offer a much more advanced, efficient approach with multiple powertrain options. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version is likely to combine a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 20.5 kWh battery, producing around 197 bhp and 230 Nm, offering up to 100 km of pure electric range and a combined range of over 1,100 km. Alongside this, the EV variant could feature a 56.7 kWh battery delivering 136 bhp and 200 Nm, with a claimed range of up to 500 km and fast charging from 30 to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes. If launched as expected, the Starlight 560 could emerge as one of the most accessible plug-in hybrids in India, positioning itself against rivals like the Mahindra XUV 7XO. At the same time, the EV version could compete with the XEV 9e.

Pricing

The pricingThe pricing

Here’s the real test. Hector’s strongest selling point was always the combination of premium features at a relatively accessible price. If MG prices the Starlight 560 aggressively with base variants starting around Rs 18 lakh and the top fully-loaded trim staying under or around Rs 26 lakh, it would create enormous pressure across the segment. Given MG’s track record of disrupting the market on launch day pricing, this isn’t an unrealistic expectation.
