Volkswagen Polo Comeback – Possible?

A news headline was a topic of discussion, that VW is considering to re-launch the Polo as an SUV! If this works out, then we can see the Polo as the most affordable SUV under VW’s lineup. The same as Skoda branded with its Kylaq.

Yes, we know that in the international markets the VW has launched Tera SUV, as its Kylaq rebadged model. But, considering the popularity of the ‘Polo’ nameplate amongst Indians, the same Tera can be introduced with Polo nomenclature here. This will help the brand to catch the attention and eventually have a boost in sales. So, how will the new VW Polo look-like?

Most Affordable Volkswagen SUV

In the international markets, the VW Tera SUV is already on sale. In India, we are expecting the same model, but with the Polo name tag. That said, the design, features as well as the powertrains will be similar to the international model.

The feature’s expected to be on offer includes – 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, digital driver display, ADAS suite, ambient lighting, wireless charging and more in its package. Yes, to make this SUV more exciting – VW might offer the ADAS suite, missed out by the Kylaq. Moreover, VW can try to not offer the plastic claddings just near the end of rear seats, that make the space compact on the Kylaq.

Under the hood, expect the model to be powered with a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine (113bhp & 178Nm), the same mill does its duty on the Skoda Kylaq. Transmission duties will be handled by a 6-speed manual and AT gearbox unit.

Volkswagen might also go a step further and offer a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox on the model. It will be a more performance centric model, either can be an edition or sold as a GTi unit. However, at present it’s just a speculation, the reality is still kept in the VW’s board room.

Launch & Pricing

As said, we are yet to receive any official confirmation from the brand, regarding this SUV. But, we expect the German automaker to at-least reveal either of the details of this SUV in the first half of next year. Once launched, this SUV will be the most affordable model sitting in VW’s lineup, expected to be priced between Rs 9.5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). While its powerful version might be priced slightly premium.
