Triumph’s Plan To Beat Royal Enfield!

Triumph entered the popular 400cc segment in 2023 and enjoyed good amount of success. Since its launch, its entry-level bikes have gained popularity. However, it needs something special to take on the likes of Royal Enfield. So, Triumph may soon launch a new 350cc engine which will be offered with its existing bikes, the Speed, Scrambler, Thruxton and T4.

But is this move really just to compete with Royal Enfield? Well, no! One of the key reasons why Triumph would develop a new 350cc engine is to tackle the tax brackets. A couple of months ago, the GST 2.0 reforms hit the market, which slotted bikes above 350cc into a luxury and sin category, increasing GST rates from 28% to 40%.

At that time, Bajaj, Triumph and KTM decided to absorb the price hike for the benefit of the customers. However, this would affect the company’s margins. So, rumours suggest that Triumph is currently working on a new 350cc engine to fit into the tax bracket. This will also allow Triumph to price its bikes more aggressively.

In fact, our sources have conveyed that Triumph will offer the new 350cc engine in the Scrambler. Coming down into the 350cc segment will allow Triumph to directly compete with the RE bikes. Plus, with better pricing, Triumph may have an upper hand in the segment. The current 398cc engine might be downsized to fit in the sub-350cc segment. With that we expect the power figures to go down a bit. The engine may then produce around 32-35bhp and 33-36Nm of torque. The refinement of engine is expected to be same as the current one. However, to cut down the cost, Triumph might start to offer conventional brake pads instead of sintered ones, also some features can be missed out.
