Upcoming Hyundai SUV – What’s Cooking?

Korean automaker Hyundai recently unveiled a new concept called Crater. The concept gives a glimpse of a big boxy off-road SUV. Being in the concept form, some new rugged SUVs – inspired from this will be hitting the roads in the coming years. But at first, it will be targeting the international markets. So, what’s for Indian enthusiasts?

Now, India might also see this SUV, but in a very different avatar. The concept showcases a boxy-SUV with a chunky muscular bonnet – don’t miss out the 33-inch off-road focused tyres! They are something that makes this SUV look like a monster. The headlamps and taillamps are designed with pixel-like elements – but the auxiliary lighting over the roof, that might be missed out going into the production unit. Don’t let the concept images make you think it’s a very big SUV, Hyundai says it will be of the same size as the Ioniq 5.

Digging in deeper, the interiors give out a rugged yet futuristic setup. Opening the door, you are welcomed with a clean interior enabled with a dynamic heads-up display, LED ambient lights, squared-off steering wheel that has terrain mode buttons for Snow, Sand, Mud, Auto and XRT.
No details on powertrains yet, but the final production model will be an electrified version. Being off-road focused, the byproducts of this SUV will get supported by dual motors giving the extra power and torque.
Will It Rival Thar In India?

Hyundai will be launching several new SUVs in India, the list might also contain a version of this off-road rugged SUV. The version that might grace our shores would be measured around 4.3metres, the details are yet to be revealed.

It is expected to be based on the same e-GMP platform, currently underpinning the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Along with dual motor support. The battery packs expected are: a 73 kWh (India-spec Ioniq 5) for RWD and 84 kWh (USA-spec Ioniq 5) for AWD configuration. The interiors will see some changes, as the design is still in the concept form – a near production model is expected to be showcased in the coming years. Moreover, Hyundai might also show the India-spec model at the 2027 Auto Expo.

In India, it could rival Mahindra’s upcoming Thar.e, which is expected to be launched by 2028-29, the same time this Hyundai’s off-road model might debut. Along with that, Hyundai might also look to localise the production of this SUV, and might be launched at a price between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). This will help in keeping the cost low and go up against the Mahindra.
