Toyota 7-seater – Why Is It Not Popular?

Now, it must be a shocker for many to know that one of the Toyota 7-seaters is struggling in India. But in a way, it is not a Toyota-made product! As we know, Toyota & Maruti have had a product sharing strategy for quite some time. With the help of this strategy, Toyota has been able to boost its sales with the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which is essentially a Maruti product – the Grand Vitara. However, the same cannot be said for the Toyota Rumion – a 7-seater based on the Ertiga. For starters, the Ertiga has been one of the best-selling 7-seaters in India. And launching a rebadged version of a best-seller definitely made sense for Toyota. Unfortunately, the result was not as expected, at least what the monthly sales show.

For your reference, in November 2025, Toyota sold 1,818 units of the Rumion, far behind the overpriced Fortuner, which sold 2,676 units in the same month. On the other hand, the Ertiga had sales of a whopping 16,197 units in November 2025. And this has not been the case for just one month. Even in the previous few months, there has been a significant gap between the Rumion & the Ertiga, or even the Fortuner. What is the thing that makes it difficult for Rumion to gather more sales in India?

Why Is Toyota Rumion Unlooked?

The biggest reason the masses have not yet accepted the Rumion could be the popularity of the Maruti Ertiga. Yes, the Rumion is the same as the Ertiga, but the Maruti product has established its own identity amongst the buyers. Also, the Ertiga has been a popular choice amongst cab service providers, thanks to the impressive reliability & low maintenance costs.

The other reason could be the pricing. The Maruti Ertiga is currently priced between Rs 10.30 lakh & Rs 15.33 lakh (on-road, Mumbai), while the Rumion is priced between Rs 12.76 lakh & Rs 16.56 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). So, as you can see, the Rumion is a couple of lakhs expensive than the Ertiga. And as the Ertiga has demand in the cab market, its affordable pricing has a significant impact.

At the same time, Kia has two offerings in the segment – the Carens & the Carens Clavis. Among these, the Carens is now targeted towards the cab service providers. The more spacious 7-seater is priced between Rs 13.04 lakh & Rs 15.39 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Although slightly expensive than the Rumion, the Carens can be opted for with multiple engine options, including a diesel. And if a buyer wants to spend more and get a premium product, Kia has to offer the Carens Clavis. The Korean MPV is a more premium & feature-loaded product.
