Tata Punch Vs Hyundai Exter

These two are the most accessible SUVs currently on the market. The Tata Punch starts at ₹6.55 Lakh and tops at ₹12.01 Lakh (on-road Mumbai), and the Hyundai Exter starts at ₹6.91 Lakh and tops around ₹11.78 Lakh (on-road Mumbai). But which one of these SUVs makes the most sense and offer the best value for money? Let’s find out the answer!

Design and Presence

Punch and Hyundai exter have received significant updates as of March 2026, making the choice harder. Thanks to the facelift, the Punch now features a sharper front with a slim LED DRL strip and vertically stacked projector headlamps. With 193mm of ground clearance and 16-inch diamond-cut alloys, it stands with its SUVish stance.

However, the Hyundai Exter Facelift focuses on a ”modern-boxy” aesthetic. The new update introduces a gloss-black panel between H-Shaped DRLs and a more aggressive skid plate. While it is taller with 1643mm, its ground clearance of 185mm is a bit lower than that of the Punch.

Tata Punch Vs Hyundai Exter – Features & Practicality

Both cars have increased their purchase value due to significant changes in their interiors. The Tata Punch cabin now feels more premium with a new 10.25-inch infotainment system, a full-digital instrument cluster, and the “Smart Digital” two-spoke illuminated steering wheel, as seen on the Nexon. It also gets the 360-degree camera and ventilated seats in the top-spec Creative+ trim.

However, Exter features a segment-first factory-fitted dual dashcam, a voice-enabled sunroof and a wireless charger. It may not have as many features as the rival, but it gets you all the bare necessities. The Punch edges out the Punch in this category.

While both brands mastered the art of CNG packaging in the boot, the Punch iCNG uses patented twin-cylinder tech tucked under the luggage floor to offer a usable 366-litre boot. While the exterior Hy-CNG Duo also uses dual cylinders and has moved the spare wheel to the underbody, it offers a slightly smaller 225-litre space in the CNG avatar. In petrol-only variants, the Exter leads with 391 litres.

Performance & Powertrain

The best update for the year is under the hood of the Tata Punch. It now offers a Turbo-Petrol engine, making it the performance leader of the segment. However, the Exter’s 4-cylinder engine remains the benchmark for refinement and smooth city driving.

Tata Punch Vs Hyundai Exter – Safety

Safety is now a priority for Indian car buyers, and Tata is a go-to option for desi safe cars! The Tata Punch continues its 5-star GNCAP legacy. For 2026, 6 airbags, ESC and ISOFIX come as standard

The Exter has standardised 6 airbags and over 30 safety features across all trims. It also includes a Hill-Start Assist and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. It may not have been tested for NCAP yet, but it is by no means an unsafe car.

Verdict

The Punch wins the debate thanks to more features, a more powerful powertrain, and bolder looks. However, if your priority is a refined 4-cylinder engine and understated aesthetics, the Hyundai Exter remains the choice for you.
