Useful or Useless? » MotorOctane

Indian customers are drawn to features that make their lives easier, but some often choose features over practicality. Once the excitement of a brand-new car settles down, many of these headline features quietly slip into the background. Some features are so appealing that people buy a car just for that specific feature. Here are five such features that Indian buyers often ‘forget’ after purchasing the car.

ADAS

Lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and emergency braking sound like having a co-pilot ready to take over. Yet, put that same system into the chaos of city traffic, and many drivers instinctively switch back to manual control. Stop-and-go traffic, potholes, and unpredictable chaos make ADAS beep unnecessarily, reacting to every little obstacle.

Panoramic Sunroof

Everyone loves the idea – open the roof, feel the sunlight, and capture nature. But reality hits fast. Harsh sun, dusty roads, and scorching afternoons quickly turn it into something you leave shut, and for most, it stays that way for months, remaining a feature to boast about.

Big Touchscreen

Another tempting gadget. Navigation, apps, media, and now even A/C controls are integrated into the screen itself. It feels good in the brochure. In practice, it becomes a fingerprint-covered distraction, and navigating through stored features makes it even worse. Most owners end up using only the basic functions like stereo or phone mirroring, leaving the rest of the fancy interface untouched. Most of them prefer using the physical, tactile buttons for AC controls instead.

AWD or 4WD Systems

AWD can feel thrilling in the hills or monsoon-soaked streets, but in cities where most people commute, it’s a dormant feature. Cars like the Grand Vitara and Victors have AWD, and 4WD in the Fortuner makes it a top variant to boast about. But practically, it’ll rarely be put to use in most of your driving.

Hands-free Electric Tailgate

The hands-free tailgate sounds cool. Just wave your foot under the rear bumper, and the boot pops open. Perfect when your hands are full with groceries or luggage. But in real life, it’s often slow, taking a few seconds to respond, and sometimes it doesn’t open at all on the first try, causing frustration. Most of us end up opening it manually out of habit or because we’re in a hurry. So even if this feature makes the vehicle desirable on the spec sheet, it feels less practical and remains ‘lost’ in the owner’s mind.

In the showroom, features like ADAS, panoramic roofs, big touchscreens, AWD, and hands-free tailgates look impressive and exciting. In everyday life, most of them see very little use. Many buyers enjoy having them to show off or keep their car feeling premium, but for the most part, these gadgets stay idle throughout the car’s lifetime. It’s a simple reminder that what makes sense on paper doesn’t always make a difference on the road.
