The brand Innova has become synonymous with reliability. Everyone has heard the fable of its impressive reliability, and Toyota hasn’t let them down yet. Launched in 2005, it received minor facelifts over the years. However, in 2016, Toyota introduced a completely revised model, the Innova Crysta. This change in nomenclature indicated that more cars would be launched under the Innova brand name. And this prediction was correct as Toyota unveiled the Innova Hycross in 2022.
Unfortunately, Toyota have forgotten to update the Crysta ever since. The 7-seater (also available as an 8-seater) has become outdated, especially with the rise of midsize SUVs like the Alcazar, XUV700, and Scorpio N. The Innova is long overdue for a thorough makeover. Here is all the information you need to know about the upcoming facelift.

Exterior Updates

The Innova Crysta looks fit for purpose. It has been designed to maximise cabin space and practicality, which is evident once you step inside. It has one of the most spacious cabins on the market and ample boot space even with all the seats in place. Furthermore, the 3rd-row seating is actually usable, which is quite rare. Toyota has done an impressive job with its design to maximise space, and it would have no issues using the same platform for the upcoming facelift.
From the outside, the Crysta has aged well. However, Toyota may also need to improve its safety features, since the current Crysta comes with only 3 airbags as standard, while top variants get 7. The Crysta commands road presence and looks built to last. As a result, Toyota’s changes are expected to remain purely aesthetic.
Cabin updates

Once you step inside the cabin, the Crysta clearly shows its age. A relatively puny 8″ screen is the first glaring issue you notice. It lacks amenities such as ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and a panoramic sunroof. Moreover, features like powered driver seats and cruise control are only available with the higher variants, which is particularly shocking considering its price tag. You find the above-mentioned features in cars that are significantly cheaper than the Crysta. On top of that, Toyota recently showcased the next-gen Hilux, and the possibility of the new Crysta using a similar cabin is very high.
Toyota has made minor additions to this feature list by adding Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but this is a relatively weak attempt to catch up to other SUVs. The upcoming facelift will see the most comprehensive update since its launch. Toyota recently showcased the next-gen Hilux, and the possibility of the new Crysta using a similar cabin is very high.
Powertrain
You don’t have the option to choose a powertrain. The Crysta comes with a 2.4L diesel engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. The diesel engine packs a solid low-end punch. In the past, Toyota offered a petrol engine and an automatic gearbox, but has since stopped offering these options. The petrol engine was infamous for being a gas-guzzler, which may have been the reason it slowly faded from favour.
Toyota will offer an all-new range of options with the facelift. These options will most likely be similar to those provided with the next-gen Fortuner. Toyota may introduce a strong hybrid-petrol option with the facelift as well. The engine options are
Rivals
The MPV segment is relatively narrow and is dominated by the Maruti Ertiga. Other MPVs like the Renault Triber, Kia Carens, Mahindra Marazzo, Toyota Innova Hycross and the Maruti Invicto all sit in lower price brackets. You could compare it to SUVs like the Mahindra Scorpio N, Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari and the Hyundai Alcazar.
Among all the competition, the Innova Crysta offers the best practicality but falls short on value for money.

Expected Price And Launch

The outgoing model starts from 24 lakh rupees (on-road, Mumbai), and the top model exceeds 31 lakh rupees. Essentially, you are paying this amount for its reliability, durability and build quality and are willing to sacrifice features and luxuries for it. To ensure the upcoming Innova can compete with its SUV rivals, Toyota would need to keep the pricing the same while adding more features and amenities.
The launch date is yet to be confirmed, but speculations suggest that we could see the next-generation Innova Crysta by early to mid-2027.
