Cheapest 7-Seater SUVs – Bolero

You would expect Mahindra to dominate these lists since it has dedicated itself completely to SUVs. And the Bolero started this pivot for Mahindra. Like the Qualis made Toyota a household name, the Bolero did that job for Mahindra. Its sales remain strong as Mahindra sells the 2nd largest amount of SUVs under the Bolero name.

The Bolero is as rudimentary as it gets. The price starts from Rs 9.54 lakh and goes up to Rs 11.56 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). It is offered with bare necessities like a USB-C type charging port, a 7-inch infotainment screen, reverse parking sensors, powered windows, Air conditioning, leatherette seats, and that’s it. You may sacrifice some modern amenities, but you are repaid by the 2 extra seats and the workhorse 1.5-litre diesel (75bhp & 210Nm) mated to a 5-speed gearbox and RWD drivetrain. The Bolero remains true to its “SUV” roots and can go places other compact SUVs can’t. This ruggedness and go-anwhere attitude is why the Bolero is the SUV of choice in non-metropolitan cities.

Citroen Aircross X

While the 2  Boleros offer ruggedness and practicality, you sacrifice a lot of luxuries for it. But that isn’t the case with the Aircross X, which gets a bucket load of features and supreme practicality. It is priced between Rs 9.98 lakh and Rs 16.76 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). The base variants are offered as  5-seater and the 7-seater range starts from Rs 13.76 lakh.

While the base variants may be bare-bones, the top variants come with features such as powered ORVMs, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, wireless charging, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and more.

The 7-seater trim is offered with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol (108 bhp & 205 Nm) engine, and the gearbox options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AT.

Bolero Neo

The Neo is the modern sibling of the Bolero. You get a few more features and a sharper look with the Neo. And if its 7-seats aren’t practical enough for you, you can opt for the 9-seater, Neo Plus. The Neo is priced between Rs 10.39 and Rs 12.71 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

At the feature front, you get 16-inch alloys, a 9-inch infotainment screen, and leatherette seats, cruise control, reverse parking camera, follow-me-home headlamps, rear wiper and defogger. It may not be the most extensive list, but you do get a 7-seater SUV for the price of a base or mid-trim Nexon.

A 1.5-litre diesel (99 bhp & 260 Nm) powers the Bolero Neo and comes with a 5-speed manual as standard. And like with the Bolero, it is also an RWD. If you opt for the 9-seater Neo Plus, you get a more powerful powertrain, but you pay a 2 lakh premium.

Tata Safari

The Safari makes this list as the range starts from Rs 15.79 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). If you want all the features, the price could cross Rs 30 lakh. But if you are very strict with your budget, you would have to settle for the base variant. So what do you get with the base trim?

Its feature list includes 17-inch alloys, 6 airbags, automatic climate control, LED DRLs and LED taillamps, and a 7-inch digital driver’s display. You get amenities like an infotainment screen, a 360-degree camera, Level-2 plus ADAS, a Harman Kardon sound system, and much more on higher variants.

To get the Safari for less than Rs 16 lakh, you would have to opt for the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol (168 bhp & 280Nm). As expected, you get no automatic options at this price point, as it is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Scorpio Classic

This is Mahindra’s third car in this list, and this is arguably the most popular one. While the Classic range tops out at 20.46 lakh, you can get the base S trim for Rs 15.97 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).  You pay a steep price for the Scorpio tag: it is the most expensive SUV on this list, yet it offers the fewest features of all.

For this price, you get basic features such as 2nd-row AC vents, dual airbags, rear parking sensors, a hydraulic-assisted boot, and manual air conditioning. Higher variants get features like a 7-inch infotainment screen, fabric seats, powered windows, electric ORVM adjustment, etc.

To make up for this brief equipment list, you get the reliable 2.2-litre diesel engine (130 bhp & 300 Nm) mated to a 6-speed manual.
