King of Resale Value

The Toyota Innova has become a household name. If you were to book a 7-seater for a long family road trip, the Innova was the obvious choice. The first three generations of the Innova were simple, practical, reliable and comfortable. It had everything you want from an MPV and was beloved by Indians. With the Innova Crysta, Toyota tweaked this recipe and, expectedly, it worked. Despite not getting any major facelifts since its launch, it is still sought after by buyers.
We came across an interesting story about the Crysta on the internet. One Innova Crysta owner managed to sell his car for Rs 20 lakh. This amount may not seem that interesting to the naked eye, but once you get to know all the details. You will be shocked.
This was a 2018 Innova Crysta with just 40,000 km on the odometer. The owner had bought it for Rs 21.5 lakh 8 years ago, and managed to sell it for Rs 20 lakh. This means that the car lost just Rs. 2.5 lakh of its value over 8 years, or an average of just Rs 31,250 lost each year. It retained 93% of its original value. If you factor in inflation, the owner might have turned a profit on the Crysta. The pricing of a brand-new Innova Crysta starts from Rs 22.90 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). The buyer could have bought a brand new vehicle for just Rs 3 lakh more. So why did he settle for a pre-owned version?

What Makes the Innova Crysta Special?

This isn’t a rare story either. Both the Innova and Fortuner are famed for their resale value. It may lack the features of other cars in the market, but many people buy it solely for its resale value, reliability and comfort. This is because these cars are incredibly dependable and can easily touch 2 to 3 lakh kilometres without breaking a sweat. As long as you get regular maintenance done, it will last you an eternity. Moreover, this 7-seater is quite practical, making it even more desirable.
You might wonder that the Crysta is pretty common, so why are people paying such a heavy price for it? Other than the fact that it was a low-mileage and single-owner vehicle, this particular unit was the 2.8G variant. This was powered by the 2.8-litre diesel engine. Toyota has now discontinued this engine in the Crysta (which now gets a 2.4 diesel, but that too for a limited time), making it even more sought after. What made this engine special was that it is the same engine you find in the outgoing Fortuner. This meant that you got the power of a Fortuner in an MPV. This engine pulled smoothly and was quite fun to drive. On top of this powerful engine, it was comfortable and had the Toyota seal of reliability. The engine was a gem, and it is understandable why people still find it desirable.
