Fuel Efficiency is king in India, which is why cars like the Dzire, WagonR, and others are popular. And the common misconception is that the more expensive the car, the lower its fuel economy. But that isn’t the case, as this newly launched supercar flaunts a fuel economy that would leave cheaper cars to shame. Here is what you should know about it.

Ferrari 849 Testarossa Launched!

When you think of supercars, you expect the fuel economy numbers to be single-digit. But that is not the case with the Ferrari 849 Testarossa. After looking at its ridiculous power figures, flamboyant looks or the long price tag, you would also notice a striking fuel economy figure of around 10.5 kmpl. This number is pretty similar to the real-world figures for cars like the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV7XO, and better than those for the MG Hector. But of course, if you are planning to buy one, the fuel economy would be the least of your worries. So what else do you get for Rs 12.39 crore (on-road, Mumbai)?

Looks

The 849 may divide opinions amongst the true Ferrari purists, but step close to the Testarossa and you would forget all that noise. It is distinctly a Ferrari, even if you ignore the symbolic “Rossa Corsa” paint. It adopts some design elements from the legendary 512 S, while borrowing aesthetics from the modern 12Cilindri and F80.

These aesthetics aren’t just for the eyes; they serve an actual purpose. The dual tail fins, massive side intakes, the mean-low stance, gigantic diffuser and other such details are responsible for generating almost 450kg at 250 km/h. If you are a motorsport geek, you can understand why this number is substantial. All in all, the benefits of these aesthetics are noticeable on track, as it is only 0.2 seconds slower than the hardcore SF90XX and almost 1-2 seconds faster than its predecessor, the SF90, across the Fiorano track.

With the Assetto Fiorano pack, you get additional features like twin rear spoilers, updated graphics, and other weight-saving measures that shave off almost 10 kilograms and improve downforce.

Ferrari 849 Testarossa Launched – Powertrain

The Testarossa is an iconic name that Ferrari reserves only for its best supercars, and it has now been applied to the 849. The “849” symbolises 8 cylinders and a 499 cc displacement capacity per cylinder. The name Testarossa stands for “red head”, and the name has an interesting racing pedigree, but we will get into details some other day.
It is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, mated to 3 electric motors (two at the back and one at the front), an 8-speed F1-style DCT and a 4WD drivetrain. The outcome of this powertrain is a mind-numbing 1036 bhp and 842 Nm of torque. It can touch 0-100 kmph in under 2.3 seconds, 0-200 kmph in 6.3 seconds, and flat-out touch 330 kmph.
But what’s more interesting is the PHEV powertrain. The 7.45kWh battery pack means the Testarossa can travel up to 25 km in electric-only mode. This helps the Testarossa achieve an impressive 10.2 kmpl claimed fuel economy. You can show these figures to your family members and make a case for buying one.

Ferrari 849 Testarossa Launched – Interior

On the inside, it’s a serious business. The driver has full control over everything, as the infotainment screen is integrated into the 9-inch digital driver’s display. Most of the controls, like engine start/stop, traction modes, turn indicators, etc are found on the steering wheel. Other key details inside include Alcantara bucket seats, carbon-fibre elements and a floating gear selector.

It also comes with modern luxuries like an ADAS suite, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, and a 7-speaker audio system. But let’s be honest, would you really care about half these features when you are listening to the glorious V8 note coming out of the dual exhausts?
