2 Lakh Kms In Less Than 2 years

A Tata Curvv.ev owner has driven his car for a whopping 2 lakh kilometres in 17 months. It was driven daily for more than 350 km and is living proof that EVs can be as reliable as a Toyota. What’s even more impressive is that the battery hasn’t been replaced either. But you may wonder that many modern cars can achieve this feat, so what’s so special about this specific vehicle?

This Curvv.ev owner has busted the myth that EVs can’t be reliable or match a conventional ICE engine. In fact, many ICE cars would struggle to reach the 2 lakh km mark in 17 months.

Save Rs 8 Lakhs!

To get a more thorough perspective, let’s look at the costs that the owner would face if he had bought a Curvv diesel instead. The Curvv diesel is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel and has a real-world efficiency of around 15 kmpl. And when you calculate the spending, it amounts to –
- 13,333 litres of fuel
- Rs 12,00,000 spent on fuel (as per Rs 90/litre)
- Rs 6/km
And we are being generous with this amount, as city driving would usually offer a lower efficiency than 15 kmpl. Moreover, the Curvv is also offered with a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre petrol engine. And when you consider that petrol prices are higher, while the efficiency is lower, the cost would be much higher than Rs 12 Lakh.
On the other hand, the running cost of the Curvv.ev around Rs 2/km, which means that it costs Rs 4 lakh in charging costs over the same duration. Moreover, if the car is charged primarily using a home charger, rather than a public one, the cost can be as low as Rs 1/km. Essentially, this owner saved Rs 8 lakh in fuel costs alone over 17 months.
Now, keep in mind that we haven’t included the service costs in these calculations. If included, the EV’s ownership cost would be even lower.

But Higher Ownership Costs?

There was a point when EVs were considerably more expensive than the ICE vehicles. But the gap has been narrowed substantially. The ICE Curvv is priced between Rs 11.08 lakh and Rs 22.55 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai), while the Curvv.ev costs between Rs. 18.39 lakh and Rs 23.29 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). But Tata is also offering discounts of up to Rs 3.8 lakh on the EV model, which means that both are priced neck and neck.
Not to mention, Tata also offer lifetime warranty on the battery pack, which means that even if the battery goes kaput, you can get it replaced without any hassle. I am running a few minutes late; my previous meeting is running over.
