Tata’s Partnership

The Stellantis group and Tata Motors have had a long relationship in India. In fact, today marked the 20th anniversary of Tata’s 50:50 joint-venture with Stellantis. On this occasion, Tata and Stellantis have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). While both these brands haven’t elaborated on the technical details, they have announced that this move has been made to “explore further opportunities for collaboration across manufacturing, engineering and supply chain in India and overseas.”

Tata and Jeep have been major beneficiaries of this collaboration as they have used many of Fiat’s engines in their cars, and now Tata is expected to return this favour as well.

New Engine

Tata shares its Ranjangaon manufacturing plant with Jeep. And in return, Tata uses the multi-jet engine on a majority of its SUVs. Tata uses the 2.0-litre multijet diesel engine on the Harrier and the Safari, while it also powers the Compass and the Meridian. While the tuning and power figures may differ across these cars, it is essentially the same engine. Moreover, Tata has now also acquired the licensing rights for this engine.

And now speculation suggests that Tata will offer its newly-developed 1.5-TGDi (from the Sierra, Safari and Harrier) to Jeep. As of now, the Compass and Meridian are offered with a single engine option – the 2.0-litre diesel. This 1.5-litre turbo-petrol could be offered in these 2 Jeep SUVs to give the customers more options. While Jeep used to offer a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol back in 2023 due to BS6 norms, this engine would mark a return for a petrol-powered Jeep.

Updated Jeep SUVs

Currently, Jeep sales have taken a hit. Its competitors are offering more powertrain options, better feature and are priced more aggressively. But with the new petrol engine, things could change. Jeep could offer the petrol version of the Compass and Meridian at a lower price to make it competitive in the SUV market.

Both these cars offer great looks and a decent feature list, and if Jeep decides to expand its powertrain options while offering it at a competitive price, it could eat up some of the Harrier, Safari and the 7XO’s market. We expect the Compass to be offered between 19 to 35 lakh, while the Meridien could be offered between 27 lakh and 45 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
