New Petrol Engine

Tata Motors has finally introduced the Harrier & the Safari, both with an engine & exciting features. We will come to the features in a bit. First, let’s talk about what the elephant in the room is – the new petrol engine. So, for starters, the flagship Tata SUVs get the same engine as the Sierra – the 1.5-litre TGDi engine. However, for big machines, the engine produces power at its complete potential. As originally rated, the 1.5-litre mill on the Harrier & the Safari produces 168bhp & 280Nm, slightly higher than the Sierra. The transmission duties for the petrol Harrier & Safari are handled by 6-speed MT & 6-speed AT gearbox options.

Power Delivery

Now, these SUVs will rival the XUV700 petrol, the Hector petrol, and even the Alcazar petrol. Among these, the XUV700 has a bigger 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, which is the most powerful in the segment. So, here we can compare with the 1.5-litre units offered with the Hector & the Alcazar. Now, compared to these SUVs, the Tata petrol Harrier & Safari feel on par in terms of performance. Although the power delivery is linear, the SUVs go really quickly under hard acceleration. It is also worth noting that the Harrier feels sportier and quicker than the Safari. This engine had already left a positive impression on everyone with the Sierra, and the same can be said for the Harrier & the Safari.

Refinement
What also makes it a better option than the diesel Harrier or Safari is the refinement. Tata Motors has done a commendable job with the engine. It feels extremely refined & is super silent on low RPMs. Yes, it gets noisy as you push the accelerator aggressively, but by no means does it sound unrefined! There is a sporty note to it!

Mileage

Another department where this engine impressed us was the fuel economy. Generally, petrol SUVs in this segment, like the XUV700 or the Hector, are infamous for poor mileage. In real-life conditions, the mentioned SUVs deliver a single-digit mileage figure. However, Tata engineers have done a fantastic job with this new engine. In our short drive experience, the SUVs managed to return mileage anywhere between 8 & 12kmpl! And that was after we pushed the SUVs aggressively to test the engine’s potential. So overall, it is a great combination of performance and mileage.

New Features

Along with the new engine, Tata Motors has also added a few noteworthy features. Talking of which, the SUVs now get a bigger 14.5-inch Touchscreen System by Samsung NEO QLED. It is the same unit that debuted with the Harrier.ev. The display is bright & crisp, and responds to touch immediately. Along with that, Tata Motors has also added a washer for the front & rear parking cameras – a smart addition to keep the cameras clean, mainly in rainy conditions. What also has been borrowed from the Harrier.ev is the digital IRVM, which also has an in-built DVR that can store data captured from front & rear cameras. Finally, the brand has added a memory function for the ORVMs that syncs with the memory driver seat, and dips when switched to reverse gear for better vision. Rest, it continues to offer all the features from the current models!
