Suzuki to Launch Flex-Fuel, CNG and EVs in India

Suzuki is adopting a multi-dimensional approach for the Indian market with focus on flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), CNG and electric two-wheelers

Suzuki India will shift focus towards flex-fuel, CNG and electric two-wheelers in the country. The brand is taking this approach for alternate fuel vehicles as part of its push towards cleaner mobility. The parent company Suzuki Motor Corp has rolled out the “By Your Side” mid-term plan with a multi-dimensional process to achieve carbon neutrality. It follows the deployment and use of multiple advanced technologies rather than dependent on a single tech. Therefore, Suzuki has categorised future products around three engine choices namely Flex-fuel vehicles (FFV), CNG and EV.

Starting with flex-fuel vehicles, they run on ethanol blended fuel. The FFV models are likely to play a major role in reducing emissions. The best thing about flex-fuel vehicles is that they do not require massive changes to the existing fuel infrastructure. Further, they align with the government’s vision of increasing ethanol blending. So, it is a win-win situation for Suzuki if it indeed focuses on FFV models in the Indian market.

Coming to CNG-powered two-wheeler segment, it is still in nascent stages as Bajaj Freedom 125 is the only such model in the entire world. However, we have seen multiple key brands such as TVS and Suzuki showcasing the CNG versions of their ICE-powered scooters namely Jupiter and Access 125, respectively. It is quite certain that both these models, targeted at cost-conscious consumers in urban and semi-urban markets, will go on sale sometime in near future.

We have already witnessed it in the four-wheeler segment that CNG has emerged as a strong alternative to the conventional fuel in most of the tier 1 and tier 2 cities. One of the foremost reasons behind this success of CNG-powered vehicles is affordability and low cost of running. In addition, CNG is available quite easily as compared to EV charging stations. Hence, CNG can also do wonders in the two-wheeler industry if deployed in a timely manner.

Last but not the least, Suzuki will roll out electric two-wheelers for short distance commuting in urban pockets while also trying to localise the production for an aggressive pricing. The company will also work on increasing the charging network across mjor cities in the Indian market. Needless to state, India is Suzuki’s largest market globally.
