Renault Duster VS Tata Sierra

The past few months have been really exciting with the return of two icons in India. About two months ago, we witnessed the launch of the Tata Sierra, and yesterday, Renault also unveiled its all-new Duster. Even though the original Duster and Sierra were separated by time, the popularity of mid-size SUVs and competition brought them into the same segment.

Tata Sierra VS Renault Duster:

Both SUVs were seen as trendsetters in the Indian market. In 1991, the Tata Sierra was dubbed as the first “Made In India” SUV; on the other hand, the Duster was the first compact SUV in India, launched in 2012. These trends were later followed by the entire Indian automotive industry. Here is a comparison between the latest versions of these two icons:

Design:

Renault India’s tagline, “The Icon Is Back”, is evident in the exterior design. The new Duster still follows the boxy design of its older versions, but now looks modern and robust. The front end features a grille with ‘DUSTER’ branding, exclusive to the Indian version. The rear end features a connected tail lamp with a 2D Renault Logo. Adding to the SUV character are the body claddings.

Tata has also managed to justify the original Sierra-inspired design in the new one. The boxy design, thin LED DRL running across the front of the car, and, not to forget, the iconic wraparound rear glass window maintain the Sierra character.
Looks are subjective, so we would like to know which one you prefer.

Inside the cabin, Renault offers a floating 10.1-inch infotainment system with built-in Google and a 10.25-inch driver display. In addition, it features an electric power tailgate, 6-way electric-adjustable and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and a Level-2 ADAS system.

Tata Sierra comes equipped with a triple-screen setup, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, an AR HUD, a powered driver seat, reclining rear seats, Level 2+ ADAS, and much more. Sierra’s feature list is definitely more impressive than the Duster’s.

Renault claims it is ready to secure a 5-star safety rating in the NCAP test, but no official rating has been issued yet. The same is true for Sierra as well, but Tata has conducted testing that shows a car-to-car collision, demonstrating its safety.

Renault’s powertrain offerings include a 1.8-litre engine (162bhp & 172Nm) with strong hybrid tech paired with the 8-speed DHT, a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol (160bhp & 280Nm) with a 6-speed DCT, and a smaller 1-litre turbo-petrol engine.

Tata Sierra also features three engine options, including a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine (105bhp & 145Nm), a 1.5-litre diesel engine (116bhp & 280Nm) and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine (158bhp & 255Nm). Gearbox option includes a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed torque converter, and a 7-speed DCA. Sadly, none of these SUVs offers AWD. Duster’s 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine is claimed to be the most powerful in the segment. However, Sierra is expected to attract more customers with its diesel offerings.

Pricing:

Tata Sierra is priced between Rs 13.66 lakh and Rs 25.81 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Sierra received 70,000 bookings in the first 24 hours after commencing, reflecting its hype among Indians.

Duster prices will be announced by March 2026, but we expect them to be between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 25 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Hybrid variants can be priced higher. The booking commenced along with the unveiling. You can book your Duster today by paying Rs 21,000. Deliveries will commence from mid-April 2026 (only for the turbo petrol units). Deliveries for the hybrid variant are scheduled to commence during the festive season.

Do you think the wait will be worth it??
