New Research Shows Impressive Findings!

Highways can be a dangerous place. Constant lane changes, lane merging, and other factors make it an accident-prone environment. However, it isn’t always the driver’s fault for an accident. Many of the times, the road has been so poorly designed that accidents become inevitable. And let’s be honest, we can’t always depend on the government to fix it. And this is where this Google research steps in.

A Google research team in California, USA, examined the importance of hard-breaking events (HBEs) for road safety. This research involved finding the correlation between HBE and the number of crashes on California state highways. The study included all major factors that contribute to making a road safe, such as traffic volume, infrastructure, and dynamics (e.g., amount of times the number of lanes changes). Common Indian roads are doing terribly across all 3 criteria, and here is how this test can benefit them in the long run.

Why Is It Important?

The test was conducted using Google Maps, Android Auto and other AI mobility tools to track individual vehicles’ behaviour. This software was used to inspect the HBE behaviour of vehicles at different locations. Hard braking is usually used to avoid a crash or to react to sudden changes in the environment. The test compared the crash statistics to HBE events. The conclusion of this test showed that areas with a high frequency of HBEs are more prone to accidents than areas with lower HBEs. So, how does it affect the Indian roads?

If such research were conducted in India, it would be easy to identify all accident-prone roads. There would be no need for the police to be involved in figuring out crash statistics for every location and then trying to reach a conclusion. AI would do this job much more easily and efficiently. The Android Auto software will help find locations where HBE is frequent. A road with a high frequency of HBE indicates that the location has many accident-prone factors, for instance, bottlenecks and poorly designed lane mergers.

With this data, the entire process of identifying dangerous roads becomes simpler and more time-efficient. If the government takes action to fix such roads in time, it could save thousands of lives.
