China Bans The Flush Door Handle:

Flush Door handle ban in China Flush Door handle ban in China

On 2nd Feb 2026, China gave the final word on concealed or flush door handles. The new law suggests that all cars manufactured after January 1st, 2027, must have non-electrical door handles. And brands with existing models of this type of door are to be updated to non-electrical by January 1st 2029. Flush door handle technology is nothing, but the door handle sinks into the body of the car. This technology has been trending and being followed by manufacturers around the world. Apart from aesthetics, this door handle improves the car’s aerodynamics. If it serves some purpose, then why is China focusing on banning them?

Safety Concerns With Flush Door Handles?

This ban was followed by major safety concerns about electrically operated flush door handles. In the event of an accident, if the battery-powered system is damaged, the door handles stay retracted, making it difficult to access the cabin from outside. Even if there are climatic changes and it is exposed to extremely low temperatures, or in the event of floods, the circuits might short-circuit and become inaccessible. This can be fatal in some cases and cost lives. So, should Indians also ban this technology?

Flush Door Handle Ban In India?

Indian manufacturers, including Tata and Mahindra, have been introducing flush door handles with their latest launches. Even though they aesthetically appear the same, the technology behind them is different. Mahindra and Kia use motorised door handles that require an electrical circuit to operate. On the other hand, Tata uses manual pivot handles, which involve no motor. The pivot door handles offer greater reliability with fewer electronic components and less complexity.

Indian manufacturers should also consider safety concerns and take steps to ensure their customers’ safety. What do you think about this change?
