Even if cars manufactured after 2023 are E20-compliant, they are not designed for anything above E20. Your E20-compliant vehicle will also face certain issues with a higher ethanol blend. But somehow Maruti has come up with a solution. What exactly is this solution?

Maruti Suzuki Flex Fuel Technology:

Yes, Maruti Suzuki is ready for the future, not with the e-Vitara. But with the Flex Fuel technology. Flex-fuel-compatible cars can handle up to E85 blended fuel. Petrol with up to 85% ethanol can be used in these Marutis without worrying about damage. How did Maruti Suzuki pull this off, and when will we experience it in India?

What Is Maruti Suzuki’s Flex Fuel Technology?

The engines here are essentially the same as those in the current generation. But changes have been made to electronics and fuel lining, with the addition of some sensors. In simple terms, new sensors and electronics work together to deliver the correct air-fuel mixture to the engine. The amount of air-fuel mixture is adjusted by the injectors into the combustion chamber, ensuring optimal performance.

Advantages Of Flex Fuel Technology:

  1. Fuel Flexibility: Cars equipped with this system can run on fuels ranging from E0 to E85. Here, the cars are intelligent enough to understand which fuel they are running on and adjust the fuel flow accordingly.
  2. Environmental Benefits: The main reason for introducing ethanol into petrol was to reduce emissions. With this additional ethanol, ICE vehicles will be more sustainable.
  3. Economic Impact: Fuel prices may stabilise or decline depending on ethanol pricing and production levels. We have to import less petrol from other countries, further reducing our reliance on them. Ethanol can be obtained from sugarcane farming, providing better opportunities for the farmers in India.
  4. Faster Adaptation: Unlike EVs, where the infrastructure lags behind, and you have to struggle to find a fast charger, a flex-fuel car can fuel up at regular pumps. You don’t even have to wait hours for your vehicle to charge.

Disadvantages Of Flex Fuel:

Having heard of the advantages, there are also some disadvantages to these technologies.

  1. Lower Mileage: Compared to petrol, ethanol has a lower energy density, so more blended fuel is required to achieve the same output.
  2. Higher Initial Cost: Adding sensors and ethanol-resistant linings can also increase the cars’ initial price. Resulting in higher price tags when compared to normal cars.
  3. Maintenance Cost: Ethanol tends to attract water. This will require the cleanup after a certain interval, which can be costly at times.
