New Mileage Testing Rule!

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced a new testing method to ensure accurate claimed fuel economy figures. Up until now, the claimed mileage figures that manufacturers claim are tested with the air-conditioning switched off, delivering even better results. Moreover, the mileage testing is done in a controlled environment with all the conditions resulting in amazing fuel economy claims. However, most buyers will leave the AC on when driving to cope with the hot weather in our country.
The AC load does impact fuel economy figures, resulting in much lower fuel economy figures than claimed by the manufacturer. So, MoRTH has issued a notification stating that fuel-efficiency testing will include figures with the AC switched on and off. Moreover, car manufacturers will have to mention both these figures in their brochures and websites. This move will ensure that manufacturers show realistic mileage figures, so buyers can make an informed decision.

How Will It Work?

According to the draft notification from MoRTH, October 1, 2026, onwards, all car manufacturers will have to test fuel efficiency figures with the AC switched on. For better accuracy, the manufacturer shall test fuel economy with the AC switched on and off, and display both figures. The testing will be conducted according to AIS-213. The added load of the AC system and its effects on fuel consumption and emissions are considered in the design of AIS-213.
