Hyundai Boulder Concept Revealed!

Hyundai has unveiled the Boulder concept in the US, but given how much Indians love off-road SUVs, it wouldn’t be ridiculous to suspect it could be launched in India as well. Moreover, Hyundai has announced it will unveil 26 new models by 2030. Moreover, it has specified that one of these models would be a rugged off-roader. So, is the Boulder that off-roader?

Like with most concepts, this one looks like something from the future. Some key aesthetic features that you can notice are the gigantic 37-inch mud-terrain tyres and massive wheel arches. And, with its ridiculously high ground clearance, Hyundai is making it clear that the Boulder means serious business. Overall, it looks like Hyundai designers have used nothing more than a pencil and a ruler to make the Boulder concept. And this isn’t necessarily a negative, since if the production-spec manages to resemble even 75% of the concept, it would command road presence like none other.

Features & Specifications

Hyundai hasn’t revealed the feature list yet, but we do get a sneak peek inside the cabin. And inside, it looks like something from the dystopian future. There are no infotainment screens; instead, you get 4 gauges that display the information you need on an off-road trail. And unlike most modern cars, you also get physical buttons and dials to control features like climate control. Moreover, the infotainment screen has been integrated into a heads-up display that extends across the windshield. Another key detail we can spot is the gearbox’s mechanical linkage. But something that we can’t spot are the air vents.

Like with the feature list, Hyundai hasn’t revealed the powertrain options yet. But we expect its platform to accommodate ICE, hybrid and EV powertrains.

Hyundai Boulder Concept – Expected Pricing & Launch

It is difficult to pinpoint where the Boulder would compete in the current market. In the US, the Boulder will be sold as a Wrangler and Bronco rival, which are relatively expensive. But if Hyundai wishes to achieve good success in the Indian market, the pricing would have to be more aggressive. We could see it priced in the Rs 28 lakh-Rs 45 lakh bracket (on-road, Mumbai) and compete against the Thar Roxx and the upcoming Jetour T2 and Toyota Land Cruiser FJ. But realistically, it would be priced against the more expensive SUVs like the Fortuner and the Jeep Wrangler. It all depends on how serious Hyundai is about the Boulder in India.

Don’t expect the Boulder to be launched anytime soon, or even in this decade, as it is still in its early stages of development. However, it will be interesting to see how different the production spec will be from the concept. The closer it resembles the concept, the better the chance of its success.
