PM RAHAT Scheme

Accidents have been a prevalent problem in India for a long time. Thousands of people die on Indian roads due to accidents, mainly due to poor emergency response time. Studies show that half of the lives lost could be saved if the victim reached the hospital within an hour. This may sound like an easy problem to solve on paper, but it isn’t.

Nevertheless, the government have tried to solve this problem with the new PM RAHAT scheme (stands for Prime Minister Road Accident Victim Hospitalisation and Assured Treatment). The primary goal of this scheme is to provide urgent, cashless aid to victims of road accidents.

What Is This Scheme About?

This scheme will collaborate with ERSS (Emergency Response Support System). At the scene of the accident, citizens can call the ERSS at “112” and alert the operators. The operators will notify the nearest hospital about the accident, and immediate help will be sent. Now here is where RAHAT comes into play.

The Rahat scheme provides cashless treatment to the victim. The government will cover the cost of the victim’s treatment for up to 7 days and up to Rs 1.5 lakh. Victims suffering fatal injuries can avail stabilisation treatment for a maximum of 48 hours, while victims whose injuries aren’t as critical are subject to up to 24 hours of treatment.

How does This Scheme Work?

The RAHAT scheme integrates many crucial aspects of accident response. Within this initiative, important factors such as accident reporting, hospitalisation, police authentication, medical treatment, claim processing, and final payment are digitally interlinked to make the aid-claiming process easier.

For immediate treatment of victims, the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF) will be used to compensate the hospital involved in treating the victims. This direct payment would eliminate a third person and speed up the entire process. Furthermore, if the vehicle involved in the accident is insured, the insurance company is liable to cover a portion of the hospitalisation costs (amounts may vary across insurance companies).

However, if the vehicle involved is uninsured or the victim was a victim of a “hit and run”, the government will pay the hospital for treatment up to 10 days. Thanks to these guarantees, hospitals won’t be reluctant to provide quick, immediate treatment to the patient.
