Maruti cars are, or were, infamous for poor build quality. The scenario has changed to some extent with recent 5-star rated cars like the Dzire, Victoria & the e Vitara. However, some cars are yet to be updated with a strong build, which have previously scored poor ratings. Among all, one of the most popular cars, which was the best-seller in the segment for a long time, was recently crash tested. And the result is quite shocking!

Maruti Car Crash Test

Car segments of under Rs 15 lakh are always ruled by Maruti. Be it the sedan segment, the SUV segment, or the hatchback segment, Maruti has been the ruler. In the premium sedan segment, where the Honda City had been the leader, Maruti rivalled the Japanese car with its spacious Ciaz. The sedan was always popular for a spacious cabin & being a Maruti product, it offered excellent reliability & low maintenance cost. However, it was only when Maruti discontinued the Ciaz that buyers realised that they had been driving an unsafe car!

Yes, after discontinuing the Ciaz, Global NCAP decided to test the car’s safety. In which the popular Honda City rival has managed to score a shocking 1-star rating. The Ciaz scored 20.86 out of 34 for adult safety & 28.57 out of 49 for child safety. In fact, for child safety, the Ciaz has scored a decent 3-star rating. Regarding the damage, the dummy on the driver’s seat received adequate to poor ratings for the chest, thighs, feet, and other body parts. It is only the head and neck that received good remarks on impact. On the other hand, the co-driver received the majority of ‘good’ remarks on impact.

About Maruti Ciaz

Although discontinued, the Ciaz was a popular choice even in its last few months. It was always popular for a spacious and premium cabin experience. During its run, the Ciaz offered only the necessary features, such as keyless entry, leather upholstery, rear AC vents, cruise control, automatic climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen, among others. It is just that Maruti never updated the Ciaz regularly to keep up with competitors. Powering the Ciaz was a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 103bhp and 138Nm of torque, along with either a 5-speed MT or a 4-speed TC.

Overall, it is an unfortunate fact that one of the best-selling Marutis, which caused a lot of trouble for the Honda City during its time, has scored a 1-star safety rating. Maruti later shifted its focus to other cars and never updated the Ciaz, as the segment was dying in India. Today, the brand has only one sedan in its line-up, the Dzire, which is not only doing excellent sales, but is also a 5-star safety car! So, even if Maruti decides to bring back the Ciaz in future, we can expect a respectable safety rating for the car.
