New Kia SUV!

The current Kia SUV lineup consists of the Sonet, Syros and the Seltos. And to further diversify, Kia will launch a premium 5-seater SUV, the Sorento, in India. The Sorento will open up the market that has long been forgotten. If launched today, it would directly compete against the Jeep Compass and, to a certain extent, the Tiguan R-Line. The Volkswagen T-Roc, Hyundai Tucson, and Skoda Karoq have also tried in this segment before, but to no avail.

Since the Sorento is already on sale in the global markets, we get a basic idea of what the Indian-spec would look like. The Sorento is 4815mm long, which means it is bigger than the Kodiaq, Fortuner, and Tayron but shorter than the Majestor. The design language is synonymous with other Kia models. But it lacks the sporty or butch stance of other SUVs in the market and opts for more sophistication. But what’s special about the Sorento?

Rumours suggest that the Sorento will be offered with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine. We also expect it to be offered with a torque converter unit as standard. Moreover, it could also be offered with an AWD drivetrain.

There was some noise about Kia bringing a hybrid powertrain to India, but that rumour remains noise for now. But there is a chance the Sorento could get a hybrid powertrain, since the global-spec variant does.

Features

The interior is practical and well thought out, as with the Seltos. The dashboard is driver-friendly, with physical steering-mounted controls and dedicated climate control buttons to keep things simple. It also gets a pretty impressive feature list –

  • 24-inch dual-screen display
  • 14-way power driver’s seat
  • 10-way power passenger seats
  • Heads-up display
  • Wireless charging
  • 12-speaker Bose sound system
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Level 2 ADAS

It is sold abroad as a 6- or 7-seater, but we expect it to be offered only as a 5-seater. You would miss out on the last row of seats, but you will be compensated by its huge boot.

It will be priced around Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). And with rumours of the Hyundai Tucson also coming back, the Sorento could officially revive the premium 5-seater SUV segment.

We expect the Sorento to be launched in the second half of 2026. Kia has been really secretive about its development, but all signs suggest that we could see the Sorento soon.
