Is This Is The Rarest Octavia In the World? » MotorOctane

When it comes to modifications, Indians can only think of 2 cars- the Polo and the Octavia. Nowadays, a stock Octavia has become rarer than a modified one. The European vehicles are fabled for how easily they can be tuned. Out of all the builds, this is probably the rarest one out there. This particular model is a modified Octavia Combi VRS. Many people have completely forgotten about the existence of Estates in India, which makes it even more special. Here is all you need to know about this masterpiece.

Engine Upgrades

For the purists, this will read like pure poetry. The 1.8L TSI has been fitted with a Garrett Intercooler, a Code 6 engine tune with Anti-lag, a 3-inch exhaust, and a larger air intake. The engine now produces almost 230 horsepower. The purpose of an anti-lag is to minimise the turbo-lag. The by-product of anti-lag is a thunderous exhaust note.

From the outside, you wouldn’t realise that it has a stage-2 tune 1.8 TSI engine under the hood. The engine roars past 3000 rpm. After prolonged exposure, this noise can become tiresome to some. But car enthusiasts will not get tired of it.

The fuel efficiency takes a massive hit thanks to the modifications. And due to the low ride, the car is easy to scrape on speed bumps. Driving in city traffic or in rural areas can be very unpleasant.

Aesthetic Changes

Aesthetic upgrades involve an imported VRS bumper, 17-inch sport alloys, and low-profile tyres. The modifications are really subtle. These kinds of modifications look best because the car’s overall essence remains. Many owners overdo these modifications, and the car ends up looking vulgar.

Except for the touchscreen, leather seats and the air/fuel ratio gauge, it looks identical to the original Octavia. Interestingly, you do get a sunroof and cruise control, which seems extraordinary for a 2004 car. The most important thing to note in the cabin is the manual gearknob. That is all you could wish for in such a car. The changes inside the cabin are subtle and tasteful.

The clean, elegant look of the original Octavia remains, as does its practicality. The aesthetic modifications have been done to perfection.

Why Is It So Special?

Estates are an extinct breed. They boast immense practicality and excellent handling, yet Indians have never caught on to it. The Octavia Combi was a valiant effort by Skoda to bring the estate culture to India. Its failure makes the Combi extremely rare and desirable. The engine’s tunability and excellent driving experience make it even more special for enthusiasts.

The original Combi was no slouch. It had a 1.8L turbo-petrol engine, which produced a whopping 154 horsepower and 210 Nm of torque. These numbers remain solid even by modern standards, and were a revelation in 2002. This modified version just enhances that driving experience.

The risk of modifying a car is that the owner may overdo it and “rice” it. Many vehicles, mostly Polos, get distasteful modifications done, and it ends up looking miserable. But this Combi still looks pretty much like the original, has a functional, practical interior, and a mighty engine. It is a tasteful blend of performance and aesthetics.

Finding an Octavia Combi on the road is like finding a needle in a haystack. The cars are nearly extinct, and the few people who do own one will keep it sparkling clean and refrain from touching it, making this modification even more interesting.
