Everyone is curious about the newly launched 2025 Tata Sierra. Do you know about this legendary SUV? Certain cars came way too early for their time and went unnoticed. The Tata Sierra is one of the best examples of this situation. In 1991, before Indians even knew about SUVs, Tata brought India’s first premium Indian SUV. Before the Sierra, Tatas were known for their commercial vehicles; the Sierra was the first passenger vehicle they introduced. Here is why the 1991 Sierra was way ahead of its time.

Tata Sierra’s design was unfamiliar to Indians. The unique design features a three-door layout, with the iconic large rear windows curved towards the roof. In 1991, Sierra was one of the boldest-looking vehicles on the road. Tata Sierra derived its ladder-on-frame chassis from the Telcoline pickup truck, which gave the Sierra its large dimensions.

The Tata Sierra was the first-ever premium SUV in the Indian market. The Sierra introduced various features that were seen for the first time not only in the segment but in the Indian automotive industry. Interiors of the Sierra featured power windows, power steering, tilt adjustment for the steering, central air conditioning, and central locking. Also, the larger rear windows paired with the vintage sofa-like rear seat provided the best rear-seat experience in those days. Sierra used to come with two rear windshield wipers, a missing feature even in modern cars; it was necessary considering the large rear windshield area.

While other major car manufacturers offered only petrol-powered passenger vehicles in 1991, the Sierra was introduced with a Diesel engine. Tata launched the Sierra with a 2L naturally aspirated Diesel engine, producing 63HP and 120Nm of torque. Rear Wheel Drive was standard on the Sierra, and 4×4 was an option. The 4×4 powertrain layout with a Diesel engine was revolutionary in the 90s for a feature-packed passenger vehicle. Tata introduced the Sierra with a unique Dog-leg 5-speed gearbox. Unlike the traditional H-Pattern gearbox, the first gear was engaged at the lower-left.

Later in 1997, Tata launched the Turbocharged version of the Sierra, which produced 89 HP and 190 Nm torque. With this version, the H-Pattern gearbox was introduced, making a noticeable change to the Sierra’s driving experience.
In 1991, the Tata Sierra’s three-door design was not particularly family-friendly for Indians. Adding to the downside was the introductory price tag of 5 lakh (on-road Mumbai), which in the late 90s reached up to 8 lakh (on-road Mumbai). Tata Sierra had to compete against the Marutis, including the popular Maruti 800, Omni, and Gypsy, in the early years of launch. Marutis were cheaper and felt more practical to the Indian budget-conscious consumers. Later came the Mahindras with the Armada, featuring a similar engine option but at a lower price. Mahindra Scorpio became the latest competitor to the Sierra in 2002.
The Tata Sierra was on sale from 1991 to 2003; Tata sold only about 667 units in 1991, and sales peaked at 3,910 units in 1994-95. Thereafter, sales declined. And with low sales, Tata shifted its focus to its other projects. These were the reasons the revolutionary Indian SUV went unnoticed.
