The crossover SUV segment is relatively untapped, given how competitive the compact SUV segment is. Currently, the Fronx stands alone, but Hyundai plans to change that with its upcoming SUV! Here is some information that you should know ahead of its launch.

New Hyundai SUV – The Bayon

Hyundai already has a long SUV lineup with the Exter, Venue, Creta and Alcazar. We will soon see another addition to its range with the Bayon. The Bayon is already being sold in global markets, but we could soon see it on Indian roads as well.
At first glance, it looks like an i20 on stilts. It has the distinct Hyundai design language, with sharp cuts and creases, a split headlamp setup, and connected LED DRLs. At the rear, you get boomerang-shaped taillights that give it a unique look. The Bayon resembles a crossover more than a boxy SUV, which means it would compete against the Maruti Fronx. But apart from a pretty face, what else does it have to offer? Let us find out.

Features

Compared to the global-spec model, the Bayon looks outdated. It features the old Hyundai cabin layout, and Hyundai is expected to change it with the Indian-spec model. We expect a modern feature list that includes –
- Dual 12.3-inch screens
- Electric Sunroof
- Ventilated front seats
- Powered driver seats
- An ADAS suite
- Wireless charging
- Push button start
- Electrically-adjustable ORVM with auto-fold
Interestingly, the global-spec model is slightly longer than 4m. This means that if launched in India, it would be shortened to fit the sub-4m tax bracket.

Hyundai Bayon – Powertrain

Reports suggest that Hyundai will use an all-new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol with the Bayon. This engine will be a powerful unit, and an upgrade over the 1.0-litre turbo used in the Venue and i20 N-line. It is expected to be offered with a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT.
However, the 1.2-litre turbo is expected to be offered on the top variants, while the lower variants will use the 1.2-litre NA petrol mated to a 5-speed manual. This engine is also compatible with Hyundai’s dual-cylinder CNG technology and would be useful in the Bayon. Indians demand a CNG SUV, and the powertrain will fill that gap in Hyundai’s SUV range. Moreover, the trend of CNG AMT powertrains has gained traction lately, and Hyundai could offer the CNG with a 5-speed AMT.

Pricing & Launch

We expect it to be priced between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 17 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). It will be the option for those who want a more practical version of the i20, but aren’t big fans of the boxy SUV design. The Bayon will expand Hyundai’s portfolio.
Its launch is expected by Diwali this year. This would be one of the 30 models that Hyundai have promised to launch by 2030. Some of the other expected Hyundai launches this year include the Ioniq 5 facelift and the Tucson.
