Government To Impound Your Car!

Delhi car owners already face enough trouble from the government due to the car laws. The ban on diesel cars older than 10 years and petrol cars older than 15 years has worried Delhi car owners. Moreover, car owners in other cities are concerned that this law could be applied across other states.

Now, the Government of Delhi NCT has gone one step further and announced that vehicles that fall under the End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) criteria will be impounded if found parked in public spaces. Authorities will hold no regard for the vehicle’s condition, its actual exhaust emissions, or its usage. So does your car come under the ELVs criteria?

Is Your Car In Danger?

Under the ELV policy, diesel cars older than 10 years and petrol cars older than 15 years are banned. In Delhi NCR, this same policy has been applicable for quite some time now. Furthermore, the transport ministry has specified that all BS3-compliant cars (made before 2017) will face this fate. BS4-compliant vehicles are safe, for now.

You can park your car in your garage, but if it is found parked on the road or in other public spaces, the authorities will take strict action. The car will be impounded and scrapped, and authorities won’t go to the trouble of notifying you beforehand. So if you plan to park your old car outside, do it at your own risk.

What’s Next?

It is also important to note that this decision is only applicable to cars in Delhi NCR. Nearby states and cities have no reason to worry at all, at least not for now. We do not know yet whether other state governments would take such harsh action to tackle pollution. Right now, Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and this move seems kind of justified when you factor that in.

If your car is very dear to you, you can transfer it outside the Delhi NCR region. But that process isn’t simple either. You have to get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) before this transfer. If you fail to get a NOC, you won’t be allowed to move it outside Delhi NCR. Do you think this is the right move to crack down on pollution? Let us know your thoughts below.
