Tata recently unveiled the Punch facelift, and its powertrains were a major talking point. Its turbo-petrol engine made the Punch one of the most powerful cars in its segment, and Tata now has plans to unveil it with a new powertrain. Here is what you should expect from the new Punch Diesel.

A Diesel Punch?

In a recent interview, the chief product officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Mohan Savarkar, revealed that Tata would consider offering the Punch with a diesel engine if market demand warrants it. This is a pretty open-ended answer and leaves a lot of room for imagination. At the moment, Tata is the only manufacturer to offer a diesel hatchback, the Altroz. So what’s to say that we won’t get one with the Punch?

With the Punch, you get a vast array of powertrains to choose from. The Punch is currently offered with NA petrol, turbo-petrol, CNG, and electric options, and a diesel powertrain would complete the list. The same 1.5-litre turbo-diesel (88 bhp & 200 Nm) from the Altroz could be offered with the Punch. This engine would be mated to an AMT or a 6-speed manual gearbox.
And Tata won’t have to spend many resources accommodating a diesel engine in the Punch either, since the Punch uses the same ALFA platform as the Altroz. It seems like an easy task for Tata to come up with the Punch Diesel, then?
A diesel Punch will certainly be appreciated by car enthusiasts. 200 Nm of torque in a vehicle of this size will definitely be a blast to drive. Another possibility is that we could see Tata go bold and offer the diesel from the Nexon, which produces a whopping 113 bhp and 260 Nm. However, it will take more effort than adopting the Altroz engine. Tata did this move with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol, so could we see the same with the Punch?

Will We See The Diesel?

At the end of the day, diesel demand remains low for smaller vehicles. And the norms against diesel engines further restrict the demand. Plus, the additional costs associated with calibrating the diesel engine for the Punch and obtaining ARAI certification may deter Tata from releasing the Diesel. But Tata has made many bold moves in the past, and the Punch Diesel is a real possibility nonetheless. The diesel variants of the Venue, Sonet, and Nexon have done relatively well over the years, suggesting there is still a small market for the Punch diesel as well.
The current Tata Punch range starts from Rs 6.63 Lakh and the top model goes up to Rs 12.24 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). The Punch diesel will fit within this range and will be offered with the higher variants, which cost around Rs 9-12 Lakh.
Last year, diesel car sales grew compared to 2024. If this growth continues, you will see the Tata Punch Diesel sooner on Indian roads than you expect. Let us know your thoughts below on whether you want to see a Punch Diesel?
