Creta’s Old Rival Making Its Comeback In January 2026! » MotorOctane

The Hyundai Creta has been dominating the mid-size SUV market since its launch in 2015, but before that, the Renault Duster was the one that dominated and actually gave the mid-size SUV segment a start. With the latest-generation Duster test mules already appearing on Indian roads, the official launch is scheduled for 26th January 2026. Here is what you need to know about the Duster:

Launch:

Until 2012, Maruti Suzuki’s small cars dominated the Indian market, with no middle ground between the small hatchbacks and large MPVs/SUVs. In 2012, Renault introduced the Duster, based on the Logan sedan’s platform. Duster achieved a compact size and offered higher ground clearance than hatchbacks and sedans. This gave the Duster a practical cabin. Two engines were offered with the Duster, the 1.6L Petrol and the 1.5L Diesel. Initially, there was no AWD; the Duster came as a front-wheel vehicle. In 2014, Renault began to offer the AWD powertrain exclusively with the Diesel engine, which gained popularity. Renault Duster has managed to clock at least 35,000 sales annually, and in 2013, it even peaked at 64,368.

Entry of the Hyundai Creta:

Hyundai launched the Creta in 2015; it was so much different from the Duster and offered more than the Duster. After the launch of the Creta, sales of the Duster dropped by almost 54%. Over time, Renault introduced several facelifts for the Duster to meet regulatory requirements and to keep its lineup looking fresh. Renault tried various engines in the Duster, replacing the 1.6L petrol with a 1.5L unit, and in 2020, replacing the 1.5L with the 1.3L turbo-petrol unit. Also, while doing this, they dropped the Diesel unit in 2020. Sales were declining, and competition kept growing. Among all this, Renault discontinued the Duster in 2022.

Comeback Of Duster:

Renault Duster is all set to return to the Indian market. Test Mules closely resemble the Dacia Duster sold in Europe. The all-new Duster is expected to feature a Y-shaped headlamp and DRLs; the Y-shaped design is expected to carry over to the taillights as well. Duster has always had a muscular look, and it is likely to continue with the new Duster as well. In addition, there will be chunky cladding throughout the body. The Duster’s body is to be more boxy, as that’s the trend among new SUVs. The Duster’s interiors are expected to feature a 10-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital driver’s display, and other features, such as a 360-degree camera, and ADAS will be an addition to Driver assistance. There is no clarification on the powertrain offered with the 2026 Duster, but based on the European specs, we can expect either a 1.2L mild-hybrid engine, a 1.6L strong-hybrid engine or a 1.3L turbo-petrol engine. These powertrains are expected to support both FWD and AWD.

Rivals To The New-Duster:

The mid-size SUV segment is way more competitive than it was when the first Renault Duster was launched. Hyundai Creta is the familiar competitor to the Duster, but the new players, like the all-new Tata Sierra and Kia Seltos, are also equally competitive. Duster might have an edge with Hybrid tech if introduced, but Hyundai and Tata already have electric powertrains in their lineups. Also, Hyundai is looking to launch a hybrid powertrain in India, making the competition even more challenging.

Expected Pricings of The Duster:

Renault is looking forward to the Duster, which will mark its comeback into the segment it once led. Pricing is also expected to be aggressive, with prices starting at 11 lakh and rising to 20 lakh. Hybrid variants are expected to be priced slightly higher. Would you take the all-new Duster over the Creta?
