Car-Like Tech In Bikes – Is It Really Needed? » MotorOctane

Several bikes offer certain features that a four-wheeler does, like cruise control, ADAS, ride modes, map-mirror and even airbag. But there was one feature which was hard to install in the bikes – Head-Up Display. For starters, a Head-Up Display shows some important information like speed, turn navigation, rpm and gear on the windscreen of the car; to not divert the attention of the driver.

Now, availing this feature on bikes is a hard task, as only the adventure and touring motorcycle come with a windscreen, but sometimes that is a small one too. So, for bikers to not miss out on enjoying this feature, several brands came up and installed this feature not on the bike but in the helmet!

Yes, a rider never leaves his helmet, and installing this feature on the helmet will help the rider to not get distracted while driving. The AR system displays the information taken from the cluster and replicates it on the helmet visor, so no more looking down to check the speed or gear! While this feature looks cool, is the feature really worth it?

AR Helmets – You Don’t Know This!

On paper this thing looks something classy and informative. But it can also turn hazardous. Compared to the HUD available on cars – the car gets a huge windscreen and the information reflected is on a small area, hence the distraction is far less. While on a particular helmet, the visor space is less; it already has a limited FOV (field of vision), and now if the information from the cluster happens to be spread on this the vision will be lesser.

As the space will be filled with the information; it can sometimes create even more distraction. Apart from that, the main reason for having a helmet is to save your head during an accident, but we have seen some brands include a tech in helmets whereby the display sensors are placed directly near your eyes! In case of a crash, this thing can break down and even harm your eyes. Moreover, their prices are even at par, some costing nearly Rs 60,000+.

That said, this innovation does make sense but there are some loopholes too, that can cause some severities.

What do you think, should this be added on every helmet out there or it shouldn’t?
