Tata Sierra For Rs 3 Lakhs?

One key reason for the Sierra’s success has been the name itself. With the original Sierra, sales weren’t really its strong suit, but it remains an icon. The Sierra introduced India to SUVs and thus has a humongous fanbase. 

And if you are part of this fanbase, you can have one for the mere amount of Rs 2.7 lakh. Yes, that’s right – Rs 2.7 lakh only. We have found a 1992 Sierra on the marketplace listed at this price.  But is it worth buying? Let us find out.

Looks & Interiors

It may be almost 35 years old, but it still looks like no other car on the road. A 2-door SUV with such a massive rear window makes it look like an American off-roader from the 70s. In terms of road presence, the new Sierra and the Thar would stand no chance against it. The Sierra looks built for purpose, with black cladding and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. 

And this particular unit shows no signs of its 35-year age. It has been maintained really well and looks like it just came off the production line. Even on the inside, the original fabric seats have been replaced with leatherette ones. Like the exterior, the interior is squeaky clean.

Tata Sierra For 3 Lakh – Powertrain 

Being a 1992 model, it is powered by a 2.0-litre non-turbo diesel engine, mated to an RWD drivetrain and a dog-leg 5-speed manual. Tata used to source engines from Peugeot. Moreover, later in Sierra’s life, it got a turbo-diesel engine and 4WD. However, this model can still be useful in tough terrains since it is based on the old-school ladder-frame chassis. 

Don’t expect good ride quality, low fuel economy, or refinement from this engine. In fact, you should enjoy the sheer roughness of the Sierra. There are no electronics to interfere with the driver and the Sierra’s soul.

Features 

At the time, the Sierra was a revolutionary car. It came with features like power windows, power steering, tilt adjustment for the steering, central air conditioning, twin rear wipers and central locking. These features have become a bare necessity nowadays, so be prepared to sacrifice some of the modern luxuries. 

While the rear-seat experience is pleasant, thanks to the massive windows, access to it isn’t the easiest, nor is the ride comfort. It might be an SUV, but you would find it easier to live with a modern hatchback instead.

Tata Sierra For 3 Lakh – Should You Buy It? 

Absolutely, if you plan to treat it as the project car. Yes, maintenance and spare parts sourcing might be a mountain to climb, but look at the upside. It is a low-risk, high-reward option, as you don’t pay a large amount up front and you get a piece of Indian automotive heritage in return. You can make as many modifications as you deem feasible without worrying about voiding the warranty. 

And if you want road presence, it doesn’t get any better than that. It will turn the eyes of the traffic with ease, and even of those sitting in a Defender.  The Sierra is the perfect project car option for true petrolheads. If you are ready to put in the effort to make this pristine unit even better, go for it.
