Chandrakant Pulkundwar, Pune’s Divisional Commissioner, has announced a plan to improve road safety. After a recent tragic incident which took the toll of 8 lives, the authorities have decided to take strict action to avoid such instances. The accident involved a speeding truck that crashed into multiple vehicles at the Navale Bridge in Pune. Following this, the Divisional Commissioner has instructed the traffic police to suspend the licenses of road users who have been found breaking traffic rules more than 3 times. If the person continues to violate the laws, the traffic police have the authority to seize the vehicle.

The commissioner has also conveyed to other authorities to work on better road safety management to prevent such accidents. In a media interaction, the commissioner said that road safety is the responsibility of the agencies that manage it. He also asked SaveLife Foundation, an NGO, to look for accident-prone zones between the Katraj Tunnel and the Navale Bridge. The CEO of the foundation also responded to the instructions, conveying that the report will be submitted in a couple of weeks. Government authorities will also be looking into the same.

The Commissioner also highlighted the need to enforce basic traffic rules in Pune to avoid such mishaps. In Pune, two-wheeler users do not even use helmets when commuting. When the authorities tried to enforce the use of helmets, the citizens protested against the use of helmets. If such rules are obeyed by the public, the chances of accidents will surely be reduced by a significant margin. For reckless riders, the traffic police have been given the authority to penalise and suspend the license for repeated offences. For better implementation of road safety rules, the Police officials have also asked for more manpower. The PMRDA, on the other hand, will be working on identifying areas most prone to mishaps.
