The Fortuner is arguably India’s most beloved SUV. It is a vital reason for Toyota’s great reputation in India. However, with the recent announcement that the Innova Crysta will be discontinued in 2027, the future of the Fortuner has also been put in the air. So what plans does Toyota have in store for the Fortuner?

Fortuner Discontinued?

The Fortuner sells in large numbers. In fact, it sold more units last month than SUVs like the Elevate, Hector, Harrier, and Safari. This is particularly impressive, since these cars are much cheaper and offer more features. But with the new CAFE 3 norms, the future of the Fortuner, despite its strong sales, could be in doubt.
While the Fortuner sells in enormous numbers in India, it faces a more unfortunate fate abroad. In Australia, sales of the Fortuner are so low that Toyota will discontinue it by mid-2026. To put it into perspective, the more expensive Land Cruiser Prado sold almost 20,000 more units last year than the Fortuner.

Plans For India

The engine options are a big reason why the Fortuner is so popular. The 2.8-litre turbo-diesel has been a fan-favourite amongst customers, but when you hear that they are stopping production of the smaller 2.4-litre diesel, you obviously start to worry. Furthermore, Toyota’s addition of a mild-hybrid powertrain indicates it is looking to transition slowly.
But don’t worry, Toyota has confirmed that the Fortuner is here to stay. The 7-seater SUV going out of production will infuriate many Toyota enthusiasts, and Toyota realises that. It will continue to be on sale for the near future, and with the introduction of mild-hybrid technology, along with other launches like the Urban Cruiser Ebella and Innova Hycross hybrid, it will be much easier to comply with the CAFE 3 norms.

Next-Gen Fortuner

However, the issue of the Fortuner being outdated still remains. The Fortuner still misses out on features like a panoramic sunroof, ADAS, digital driver’s display and larger touchscreens. These features are nowadays available on sub-4m SUVs, which cost almost Rs 30-40 Lakh less. A similar case applies to the Toyota Hilux, which is based on the same platform.
Toyota has introduced the next-gen Hilux globally. Speculation suggests that the next-gen Fortuner will share a similar look. The new Hilux gets an identical 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre engine, with hybrid powertrains. Toyota has tweaked the engine, making it more efficient while producing a similar output. It also comes with a plethora of features, including a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, ADAS, a fully digital driver’s display, and much more.
If the next-gen Fortuner is based on this Hilux, it could solve many of Toyota’s problems. It would get a major boost in features, sharper looks and a more fuel-efficient engine.
