Test vehicle with ‘Hybrid’ badging

Maruti Suzuki is coming with the Fronx in its Hybrid avatar. The hybrid version could be more fuel-efficient and reliable, given that it is a Maruti SUV. The vehicle is spotted testing and now without the camouflage hideouts. The vehicle is in its final testing phase and could potentially roll out soon.

The upcoming Fronx Hybrid is expected to feature a strong hybrid setup, either a series hybrid or a range-extender type of setup. In this setup, the 1.2-litre Z-series (Z12E) three-cylinder petrol engine will primarily act as a generator to charge the battery pack, while propulsion will be provided by an electric motor.

This setup is designed to maximise efficiency, especially in an urban scenario. A fuel efficiency of 30 km/l, with a claimed 35 km/l, should be expected. If these numbers are achieved, the Fronx will be one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the segment.

The test mule suggests that the brand could also put the vehicle ahead in the competition with upgrades in tech and features. The Fronx Hybrid is expected to feature a Level 2 ADAS suite, which may include:

Adaptive Cruise Control

  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Automatic High Beam
  • Automatic Emergency Braking

Inside the cabin, the upgrade would be mainly hybrid-focused. Expect a revised infotainment system with hybrid-specific displays for power and energy usage, as well as drive modes. We can expect driving modes such as EV-only, Eco, and Sport. The battery pack is expected to be smartly packed under the front passenger seat, ensuring that no cabin space is used and no practicality is affected.

On the outside, the Fronx Hybrid will largely remain the same with its existing coupe-SUV styling. The only noticeable change is expected to be subtle hybrid badging to differentiate it from the standard petrol variants. The Fronx Hybrid is expected to come with a price of rupees. The current Fronx is priced between ₹8 lakh and ₹14 lakh (on-road Mumbai), and the upcoming hybrid variant is expected to command a premium of ₹2–3 lakh, bringing its estimated on-road price to around ₹10.5 lakh- ₹ 17 lakh. With this move, Maruti Suzuki is going to bring a string hybrid into the sub-compact SUV segment, positioning the Fronx as a more fuel-efficient rival to the Venue, Sonet and XUV 3XO.
