Mileage Revealed – Tata Sierra

Many people have been long-awaiting the Sierra’s efficiency figure. In fact. One avid Twitter user filed an RTI demanding the ARAI-certified figure. And thanks to this, the figures have been revealed. The Sierra is offered with 3 engines – a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine (104bhp & 145Nm), a 1.5-litre diesel engine (116bhp & 280Nm) and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine (158bhp & 255Nm). While the figures for the NA petrol are yet to be unveiled, we now have the figures for the most demanded engine options of the lot – the diesel and the turbo-petrol.

The 1.5-litre Kryojet diesel has an ARAI-certified economy of 18.8kmpl while the 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol has a claimed mileage of a mere 13.5 kmpl. The number for the Hyperion engine is particularly shocking, as Tata boasted about the engine’s fuel efficiency at the time of launch, when the engine was tested for 12 hours at the NATRAX track.

Skoda Kushaq

The Kushaq was popular for being the driver-oriented one in the segment. So people never expect good efficiency figures from it. The efficiency figures were pretty mediocre but has that changed with the facelift?

With the Kushaq facelift, the engine options remain the same. It gets the same 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine (114bhp & 178Nm) and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine (148bhp & 250Nm). The only key differentiator is that the old 6-speed AT has been replaced by a more efficient 8-speed AT. The rest of the gearbox options are identical, with the 6-speed manual on the 1.0-litre TSI and the 7-speed DSG on the 1.5-litre TSI.

The 1.0-litre 6-speed manual returns 19.66 kmpl, while the 8-speed AT returns a claimed 19.09 kmpl. The 1.5-litre TSI, which comes with the 7-speed DSG as standard, has an ARAI-certified mileage of 18.72kmpl.

Mileage Revealed – Renault Duster

 The Duster has created some buzz in the market with its powertrain options: a 1.0-litre (100bhp & 160Nm) and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol (160bhp & 280Nm). Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and 6-speed DCT.

Now, the figures for the base 1.0-litre turbo petrol have yet to be revealed, but the ARAI numbers for the 1.3-litre turbo petrol have been. With the 7-speed DCT, it returns 18.45 kmpl, while the manual has a claimed efficiency of 17.75 kmpl. It is interesting to note that Renault will unveil a petrol-hybrid by Diwali this year to cater to the mileage-loving public.

Mileage King Of SUVs?

Obviously, the hybrid variants of the Victoris, Grand Vitara or the Hyryder would win this debate. But amongst the conventional petrol/diesel engines, who comes out on top? The Creta and Seltos use similar powertrain options and return a mileage of around 17-19kmpl. These numbers are similar to those of the Duster but slightly lower than those of the Kushaq. We expect the real-world mileage of all these SUVs to be similar.

But the shocker on this list is the Sierra, which is a healthy 4 kmpl behind its rivals. When we tested this engine with the Safari, we managed to extract a decent number of 9-11kmpl. When we tested the Sierra, we extracted a city mileage of 10-12kmpl and 15-17kmpl on highways. So, why is the ARAI number so low? Guess we would have to wait for Tata’s clarification on this matter.
