The Revival Of The Sierra

First introduced in 1991, the OG Sierra was India’s first indigenous SUV, designed and manufactured in India. So, reviving this iconic SUV was definitely going to be a tough and intricate task. However, Tata absolutely nailed it! Somehow, the brand has managed to incorporate the essence and personality of the OG Sierra, with all the modern amenities, technology and performance.

The wrap-around glass roof, the boxy design, and the squared-off wheel arches pay homage to the original SUV. On the other hand, the endless list of features and safety tech meets the needs and wants of potential buyers. We believe the Sierra is and will continue to be a successful product for Tata, considering it attracted 70,000 bookings on the day of its launch. Many Indians were impressed and in awe of the Sierra when unveiled. So it is clear that the revival of the Sierra nameplate has been quite impactful. But is it just the nameplate that has had an impact? Let’s find out how Tata has managed to pull this off!

How Did Tata Pull It Off?

With the new Sierra, Tata went all in. The brand introduced not one, but two brand-new engines for the Sierra. While one is a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine (104bhp & 145Nm) producing a good amount of power and torque, the other is a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine (158bhp & 255Nm), which is one of the most powerful engines in its segment. For the diesel fanboys, Tata also offers a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 116bhp and 280Nm of torque. So, a potential buyer has a wide variety of engines to choose from. Moreover, Tata will soon be introducing an EV version of the Sierra, which could likely get AWD.

So, on the powertrain front, Tata has done wonders for the Sierra. What Tata has done really well is introduce and offer new equipment, exclusive to the Sierra. For instance, the Sierra is built around an all-new platform, “ARGOS”, and even the features it gets are not borrowed from existing Tata cars. The triple screen setup, the largest in segment panoramic sunroof, the sound system with a sound bar, and much more are unique to the Sierra. This adds a sense of occasion to the Sierra. All of these factors combined make the Sierra a very desirable SUV, offering great value, safety, practicality and features. But apart from the looks and the iconic nameplate, does the Sierra have what it takes to survive the extremely competitive segment ruled by the Hyundai Creta?
