Tata’s “Mini-Sierra” Spotted!

You can spot a Tata Sierra from a mile away. That is just how distinctive its design is. And now, we have spotted another SUV that resembles the Sierra. But with no concrete or even vague rumours about it, it is difficult to pinpoint what this car actually is. For now, we can call it the mini-Sierra due to the uncanny resemblance.

Primarily, we have identified this as a Tata car thanks to its number plate, which shows an address near Tata’s factory in Pune. Secondly, the ORVMs look identical to those on some other Tata cars at the moment.

As for the resemblance to the Sierra, it features a taillight unit mounted on the boot. And, like the Sierra, it is expected to have an auxiliary taillight inside the boot when it is open. The rear bumper also shares similarities with the Sierra. Moreover, the exhaust pipe suggests that this is an ICE model.

But how can we be so sure that this isn’t the Sierra? Firstly, you can spot an indent on the boot, while the Sierra has a completely flat boot. Visually, it appears smaller than the Sierra in both width and height (but that could be down to the camera angle). The side profile isn’t fully visible, but at a glance, it doesn’t seem like the Sierra. Furthermore, with the Sierra, the complete taillight bar lights up, which is not the case with the test mule. Plus, the taillight elements are slightly different from those of its counterpart. So what exactly is it?

What To Expect?

From its relatively short dimensions, it seems like a compact SUV to complement the Nexon and the Punch. There have been rumours that the next-gen Nexon would share a platform with the Sierra, further fueling speculation. Could this be the next-gen Nexon?

Tata could also launch it as a new model, but it is difficult to understand why it would. Its current lineup consists of the Punch, Altroz, Nexon, Curvv and Sierra, so where would the mini-Sierra slot in this range?

Nexon Interior Used For Reference

While we may not be sure what the car could be, we can expect big things on the inside. Tata would load it up with features like a panoramic sunroof, an ADAS suite, a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, a powered driver’s seat, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a fully digital driver’s display.

As with the powertrains, it could get the 1.5-litre diesel engine and the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine from the Nexon with a more powerful tune. And like other Tata SUVs, it could also be offered with an electric alternative.

Furthermore, Tata has expressed intent to bring a CNG powertrain to the Sierra. And the powertrains don’t stop there, as the Sierra’s platform can also accommodate hybrid tech. So if this test mule is based on the Sierra, it could get a plethora of engine options.

Expected Launch

When we first got these spyshots, we spent a while thinking about what this car could be. At the moment, all we know is that it is a Tata and that Tata is also planning to reuse the Sierra design template to guarantee its success. Tata has already unveiled the Punch and the Punch. The EV facelift and the Tiago and Nexon facelifts are next in the pipeline. Both these cars are expected to launch in the next 6-10 months. So it is unlikely that Tata would crowd its schedule with another launch in this timeframe. We could see it in the later parts of 2027.
