India’s First Ever Musical Road

Mumbai’s coastal road, which connects Nariman Point and Worli, is known as one of India’s finest pieces of roadwork. And now this stretch of road has become even more special by being turned into a musical road. This road has been inaugurated by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis.
You can find this unique stretch of road 500 metres after exiting the underground tunnel heading to Worli. Important to note: the entire road hasn’t been installed with these strips; it’s limited to the first lane (next to the divider). If you are worried that you might miss out on this musical lane, information boards have been placed 60 metres, 100 metres and 500 metres before the musical stretch starts.

What’s Special?

The music doesn’t just play any random tune. Every musical road has been designed to play a certain tune when cars drive over it, and it is the same case with the coastal road. The musical strips are specifically placed so that when your car drives over these strips, you can hear the tunes of the patriotic “Jai Ho” song.
The musical strips are installed so that when the car passes over them at around 70 kmph – 80 kmph, the friction between the strips and the tyres produces a musical note. These strips have been designed in unique shapes and at specific intervals, so it sounds like the tunes of “Jai Ho”.
This news has divided public opinion. Some people may consider it a fun little gimmick, but others argue that a musical road brings no purpose to civilians in any way possible. Nevertheless, it would make the regular coastal road drives more enjoyable.
