Upcoming Yamaha R2 – What’s New?

We had updated our audience about Yamaha’s plan to launch a 200cc sporty motorcycle in India. Industry sources suggest the new model might be launched by the festive season this year. Yamaha typically loves to launch its new motorcycles by the year-end, as we saw with the XSR155 last year, and this year will be the R2.
Talking about pricing, the Yamaha R2 is expected to carry a price tag of Rs 2.3 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Once launched, it will compete with the mighty KTM RC200 and Hero Karizma XMR. But, will the R2 be able to be the torchbearer for Yamaha? Let’s have a look at what is expected in this motorcycle.

What To Expect?

If you are thinking that Yamaha will discontinue its R15 to be replaced by the R2, then you are wrong. After the launch of R2, the R15 will remain on sale. Even Yamaha will replicate its R15 recipe with the R2. The 155cc engine from the R15 will be upsized, and the new 200cc engine is expected to deliver more power and torque. The engine details are still under wraps, but expect it to make around 24-25bhp and 20 Nm mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Yes, it will also feature the bi-directional quickshifter to make your rides easier. Being a Yamaha motorcycle, there’s no doubt about the performance and refinement of this engine.
That was all about the new engine, something that we mainly care about. Apart from that, we expect the design details of the new motorcycle to be similar to the R15. But it will carry more weight than its 155cc sibling. Alongside, the electronic suite will be carried over, including the Bluetooth, Turn-by-turn navigation, riding modes, traction control and others.

Big Upgrade For R15 Owners?

Once the R2 launches, many R15 owners might think of upgrading. But it won’t be a good update, as this motorcycle will be a good choice for those riding 125cc or 150cc commuter segment bikes. For R15 owners, it will only be a short boost in power and torque, and they can consider R3.
